Since the election cycle began, I’ve been overwhelmed with clients urgently needing appointments – not because of their weak constitution or their inability to see both sides of an argument, but because their Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD has flared up.

This is why there’s so much rage this election. It’s not about economic plans or the military or the economy. It’s about the majority of us who have experienced trauma and who are being repeatedly traumatized by what’s being said and done around us that reminds us of our worst day. It’s about our hearts and our stories and our belief that others may not think we deserve to exist. For the next four years, when we see hate, let’s stop and remember our worst day. Let’s remember how it felt when somebody we trusted poured salt in our wound and let us recognize when we inadvertently pour salt in somebody else’s wound too. It’s not about right or wrong, it’s about listening and allowing each other to heal. Let’s not question the validity of the wound or explain why we didn’t mean for the salt to hurt the wound or why salt doesn’t hurt our own wounds. Let’s just listen, acknowledge the pain and hold some space so healing can occur. Let’s be kind. Let’s have compassion and let’s choose to hold every hurting heart that we come across. Holding hearts and having compassion don’t mean we have to agree with anyone. It only means that we gently say, “Yes, I understand, I’m wounded too and I understand that you are experiencing pain.” That’s it. That’s all it takes in order for us to all heal each other together.

Be All You Can Be - A Conversation with Jim Channon

Jim Channon was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. Most notably he is remembered for creating the First Earth Battalion manual. Post Vietnam 1978 was a time when military morale and enrollment were at an all time low. During this period the U.S. Army needed to drastically shift approaches and prepare to defeat a vastly larger Soviet force in Europe. Army leaders called upon officers to develop needed creative approaches to dealing with this challenge. They were encouraged to fully explore the Army’s “Be All That You Can Be philosophy”. Many of the ideas contained in this and the outcomes of putting such concepts into practice have been documented by journalist Jon Ronson in his book The Men Who Stare at Goats, and now the new movie of the same name, staring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey.

Deborah Beauvais Welcomes Co-Hosts Torrin and Robbie Thorp & Zoe Terry

Most 13 year olds like to take a break from friends and school to watch movies and play video games but when Torrin Thorp was required to spend a lot of time in the hospital for Asthma, that became the only thing he could do for a while. Thorp began to look forward to and rely on the entertainment there to get through some painful, challenging procedures. His brother Robbie Thorp also went through surgery around the same time and had a similar experience. Being at the hospital so often they would both quickly reach the bottom of the movie and video game options and wished for more of a selection. Thorp wanted to take action to change this and encourage the friends he made that were still in the hospital too. In 2015, Thorp started the “The Helping Hand.”He has collected and donated almost 2,000 DVD's and Movies, donated over 650 movies, TV's and DVD players to Crossroads RI. is now expanding his outreach to "Blessing Bags" for the homeless and their dogs. Torrin is a 1,000 grant recipient from Daisy Button Believes Robbie (19) was RI's Prudential Spirit of Community Bronze Medal winner this year. He is also the New England Epilepsy Ambassador, having traveled to DC twice to participate in the Teens Speak Up/Speak Out conference. He is mentor for teens with chronic illnesses and co-chairs the RI Walk for Epilepsy.

Second Half: At age 5, Zoe Terry created her own organization called Zoe's Dolls to inspire and motivate girls of color to love themselves. She promotes positive body image by holding her "Love the Skin I'm In" Creative Expressions Contest, where she encourages girls to submit a poem or video on why they love themselves. Since launching Zoe's Dolls, she has donated more than 2,000 dolls of color to girls in need. When Zoe was younger, her mom would teach her the spirit of giving by asking her to give away one of her toys at Christmas time. Right before Zoe’s 6th birthday, she told her mom that she didn’t want to give a toy away at Christmas anymore. Zoe exclaimed that instead of giving a toy away at Christmas, she wanted to do something totally different. Zoe said that for her birthday she wanted to give little brown dolls to little brown girls who did not have dolls to play and that was all she wanted for her birthday! This was the start of Zoe’s Dolls! It was also important for Zoe to give away little brown dolls to little brown girls, because when she was in Kindergarten she was bullied because of how she looked and teased because of her “puffy” and “kinky” hair. Zoe wanted other little brown girls not to feel like she felt when she was teased. She wanted little brown girls to know that their image was beautiful.

Even though we all have Anger, it is often considered to be bad or wrong. That is because we stuff it and don’t see it until it erupts. Anger, rather than being an enemy is a necessary tool for maneuvering through life. It signals us when something inside needs the healing of our attention. It also is our fire that allows us to say “yes” when we need to say “yes” and “no” when we need to say “no.” Mary invites you to join her in exploring how to create a healing relationship with your anger so that it becomes a friend on your journey through life.
