Climate Change and Scientific Chutzpah, A Conversation with Alan Journet

Is climate change as important as some people say? What does rigorous science tell us, and where are all the scientists. Alan Journet, as a professor of Ecology and Conservation, has spent many decades studying the systems that make human life possible on this planet, and is one of the champions in the field.

Scientists are unique people. They differ from businessmen, artists, and politicians in that they are dedicated to the truth. They reach the truth through critical thinking (see Truthiness Fever Audiobook). Scientists know the truth, but few of them speak out.

In this very informative and honest conversation, Prof. Journet will focus on the consensus reached by the true experts in the field, how people let their political beliefs trump their professional expertise, and why our scientists need to act now.

By the time he had begun his studies on CO2 and global temperature on the 1970s, he had already developed a strong, “moral, ethical commitment to the idea that all species on the planet have a right to be here. It’s not our right to simply exterminate them at will, but we must or should maintain some kind of responsibility to the species around us, in addition to just ourselves.” His work has been to honor these beliefs.

Why do we humans so often act against our own self-interest? Prof. Journet explains in remarkably clear terms the conundrum known as The Tragedy of the Commons, and what we need to do to overcome this evolutionary shortcoming of our race. Only agreements that are enforced and kept can save us from this tragedy, for this we need a functioning government (what a concept).

We also reflect on my experiences in Bali and the changes that “progress” has brought to the island and, as usual, we will learn more about how this dedicated man chose to spend his life working for all of us. Join us – you will have fun and learn.

Self Worth, Love & Domestic Violence Deborah invites her soul sister Author Barbara Berger from Copenhagen for an empowering discussion on domestic violence through personal experience. How the love for a child can give a Mother the power to flee.

It was disheartening to hear about the NFL’s support for a player’s abuse towards fiancé when video showed him literally dragging her unconscious out of an elevator. Dissolving domestic violence has come along way yet in the year of 2014 it still exists. It’s a shame fiancé actually married him, some may not understand why one stays...there’s a lot of mind games, always a honeymoon stage and little self worth involved.

Many victims stay out of fear of safety. They wonder how to support themselves and or their children. They come to believe they are worthless after years of being told so. The value-less self usually stems from childhood, not feeling loved because of verbal or physical abuse. AND the abuser usually comes from an abusive childhood and chooses to continue the cycle. Yes, the cycle can be broken. At the core of every abuse story is the lack of self worth, self love.

To date, Barbara Berger has written 15 self-empowerment books documenting and presenting the tools and insights she has discovered over the years on her quest. Her books include the international bestseller The Road to Power / Fast Food for the Soul (30 languages),Are You Happy Now? 10 Ways to Live a Happy Life (15 languages), The Awakening Human Being – A Guide to the Power of Mind, and Sane Self Talk / Cultivating the Voice of Sanity Within. In all her books, Barbara explores and explains the incredible power of mind and how we can use this power wisely to live happy lives right now, regardless of outer events and circumstances. Barbara was born and grew up in the United States but today lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. In addition to English, Barbara speaks Danish and Swedish. Barbara writes all her books in English. Barbara also offers private sessions to individuals who wish to work intensely with her.

Are you searching for greater life meaning? Dr. Carl Jung, famous psychiatrist, described the life cycle as life in two phases. While the “first half” is lived in adaptation to the outer world, Jung said the “second half” is oriented toward the inner world and development of the FULL SELF, calling on a “psychic birth” and a search for new meaning. The emerging parts of ourselves simply do not always fit within the confines of the self we constructed in the first half of our lives. Wherever you are in the life process, this extremely informative show will help you to understand overall life patterns and help you nurture your emerging self. We will discuss: The stages of life and your internal and external struggles How “middle passage” is a turning point that brings new meaning even though it may cause you to feel “lost” How creative tension is essential to your growth in all stages How you can search out new meaning and step into your “largeness” or full self How to embrace growth over security, creating a fuller life!

Society has swallowed five huge lies in place of these formulas. Can you name each lie? Are the formulas YOU’RE using helping you create the life you want AND the world we need? Or are you being hijacked without knowing it, by the false substitutes that are relentlessly pitched to all of us day after day? In this highly enlightening conversation, Dr. Miller and Dr. Gruder will explore the answers to these questions and more. Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #149 kicks off a late December session with the island jam “Keep The Old/Happy New Year” featuring an upbeat vocal from Mariam and some interesting twists. A bluesy run through of Mariam’s “Standing Ones Of Peace” from the Vision Quest album follows featuring driving rhythm acoustic guitar from Mariam, Craig Harris’ steady congas and the usual rolling-thirds R&B and blatant disregard for time and key signatures from Bob Sherwood on piano. Bob and Craig take it back to the islands with an drum-heavy backdrop for Mariam’s classic “Pele” from the Gaea Star Goddesses album. An old favorite returns for a dust-off as Mariam’s dulcimer drives us into “All Life Unfolds”, a driving, mystical piece that returns to us with gospel and Indian overtones. We follow with another favorite, “Blessed By Our Life” featuring a great lead line from Mariam and imaginative, unusual variations from Bob on piano. Mariam writes another classic on the spot, accompanying herself on tenor ukelele on “Puffy On My Pillow”. “Natashalina”, another new song from Mariam follows, featuring her native flute, ukelele as well as angular piano against a steady wall of drums from Craig and Bob. After shifting through a series of dream-like variations we close with Mariam’s “Spirit Of Fire” from the Vision Quest album.

Thinking our way out of extinction, A Conversation with Rebecca Costa

Author of The Watchman’s Rattle: Thinking Our Way Out of Extinction Rebecca Costa is a sociobiologist who offers a genetic explanation for current events, emerging trends and individual behavior. A thought-leader and provocative new voice in the mold of Thomas Friedman, Malcolm Gladwell and Jared Diamond, Costa examines “the big picture”– tracing everything from terrorism, crime on Wall Street, epidemic obesity and upheaval in the Middle East to evolutionary forces.

Retiring at the zenith of her career in Silicon Valley, Costa spent six years researching and writing The Watchman’s Rattle: Thinking Our Way Out of Extinction. In her book, Costa explains how the principles governing evolution cause and provide a solution for global gridlock. When asked why the book has special significance today, Costa claims, “Every person I know, rich or poor, educated or not, wants to know why our government gets more in debt, our air and water more polluted, our jails more crowded, our security more tenuous and our children more violent. We seem to have lost our ability to solve our problems. The Watchman’s Rattle offers a genetic explanation for our paralysis, and prescribes a way out.”

The success of Costa’s first book led to a weekly radio program in 2010 called Rattler Radio. In 2011 the program was renamed and syndicated as The Costa Report. The Costa Report is currently one of the fastest growing radio programs on the Central Coast of California.

A former CEO and founder of one of the largest marketing firms in Silicon Valley (sold in 1997 to J. Walter Thompson), Costa developed an extensive track record of introducing new technologies. Her clients included industry giants such as Hewlett-Packard, Apple Computer, Oracle Corporation, Seibel Systems, 3M, Amdahl, and General Electric Corporation. Costa is known for marketing the world’s first computer-aided design and manufacturing systems (CAD/CAM), computer networking, and first multi-media microprocessors. She also pioneered the early markets for optical disks, internet-based marketing, electronic engineering records retrieval, wireless keyboards, digital scanners, just-in time inventory software and a host of other innovations in use around the world today.

Raised in Tokyo, Japan, Costa lived during the Vietnam conflict in Vientiane, Laos, where her father worked in covert CIA operations. She attributes her ability to see the “big picture” to her cross-cultural education and upbringing. She graduated from The University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences. Rebecca Costa lives on the central coast of California with her beloved dog, Tonka.
