The Stormwater Innovation Center: Growing Green Infrastructure
Guests Roy Arezzo, Urban Stormwater Education and Outreach Coordinator, The Nature Conservancy;
Rebecca Reeves, Education & Outreach Coordinator, Stormwater Innovation Center/Audubon Society of Rhode Island
Managed by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, the Stormwater Innovation Center (SIC) in Providence, RI, demonstrates a series of nature-based solutions that address a variety of water quality issues. Cyanobacteria blooms are one major sign of poor water quality. SIC scientists, engineers, educators and volunteers are working together to solve this and other water quality problems. The Center uses over 40 green stormwater infrastructure practices, which exemplify best management practices (termed BMPs). Installed by the Providence Parks Department, these BMPs show how an effective stormwater infrastructure system is designed, constructed and maintained.
Guest Roy Arezzo is the Urban Stormwater Education and Outreach Coordinator for The Nature Conservancy, working in collaboration with the Stormwater Innovation Center. In addition to monitoring local water bodies, his water quality work is focused on prevention and awareness regarding Cyanobacteria Blooms. With a biology background and a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science Education, he worked as a science teacher at several urban schools.
Guest Rebecca Reeves is the SIC Education & Outreach Coordinator with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Working in collaboration with many partner organizations, she is responsible for professional training, school programming and community outreach. Through its education and outreach initiatives, the SIC builds public awareness around stormwater issues and how they relate to environmental concerns such as supporting native habitat and wildlife. Reeves also coordinates events, including the Annual Rain Harvest Festival.

Love Nature Magic Guest Maria Rodale, Author, LOVE NATURE MAGIC
In her new book, Love Nature Magic: shamanic journeys into the heart of my garden, Maria Rodale shows how she came into relationship with the plants, animals and insects that inhabit her garden and helps readers come to understand nature's consciousness, intelligence and high awareness. When people slow down, release control and start paying close attention to Nature, the magic starts to happen. This episode begins with the story of a magical experience with an intelligent and resilient butterfly, and then it leads into a conversation with Maria Rodale.
Bestselling author, activist and gardener Maria Rodale is a board member and former co-chair of the Rodale Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to growing the regenerative organic agriculture movement through research, farmer training and education. She is also the former CEO of Rodale Inc., the global health and wellness media company that has published many notable books and periodicals, including Organic Gardening, Men’s Health, Women’s Health and Prevention magazines.
Under the pen name of Mrs. Peanuckle, Rodale has written a delightful series of board books that celebrate the joy nature brings to young children. Each “Alphabet” book presents a different category of nature: birds, bugs, flowers, trees, fresh fruits, vegetables and more. From A to Z, the bold colorful pages will engage parents, enchant toddlers and inspire the youngest of budding environmentalists and curious scientists.
Throughout her life, Maria has advocated for the potential of organic regenerative farming to heal the damage wrought by pesticides and industrial agricultural practices and their toxic impacts on human and planetary health, including reversing climate change. The underlying theme of Maria's work is this: If we stop interfering and allow Nature to do her thing, ultimately, she will heal herself and us.

Forest School Learning
Guests Diana Brennan and Lindsey Baillargeron, Educators and Founders, Northern Rhode Island Forest School
Forest Schools have roots that reach back to the open-air culture, seen as a way of life in Scandinavia. It is a long-term child-centered learning process that happens naturally through play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Forest School Learning is a timely topic that can help support the new Learning Inside Out Outdoor Classroom Initiatives happening in public and charter schools. Many schools have received grants to create, enhance and support access to natural resources for all students in the form of outdoor classrooms or schoolyard habitats. Teachers are seeking outdoor teaching strategies that will actively engage children and improve their language literacy, math, science, creative and critical thinking skill development and this episode will support and inspire that process.Diana Brennan has a B.S. in environmental science and has worked as a wetland scientist for the past 20 years. She has experience with habitat assessments, restoration projects and sustainable development. She possesses a deep understanding of Rhode Island’s natural resources. She is trained as a Level 3 Forest School Leader through Forest Schools Education, an internationally recognized program. Earning this certification gives Diana the skills and experience to guide learners safely and effectively. Having experienced first-hand the power of nature to help us heal, grow and learn, Diana is determined to counter “nature deficit disorder” by getting children and adults off of the screens and into the woods.
Lindsey Baillargeron was a classroom teacher for 14 years, having taught middle school and high school English. She earned her Master’s in English from Harvard University and studied education reform and its effect on British novels. Lindsey is currently pursuing her second masters degree to become a k-12 reading specialist at Lesley University. She is focusing on language skills children need to understand texts in different disciplines. Lindsey is trained as a Level 1 Forest School Assistant, and she will be sharing how she found her way into Forest School teaching and how it enhances her effectiveness in teaching language arts.

Why Raise Native Bees? And How?
Guest Susannah Otocki, Native Beekeeper and Holistic Practitioner, Blue Lotus Moon Holistic
Native bees are designed to pollinate, and they pollinate every flower they visit. A honey bee only pollinates about 5% of the flowers it visits. A honey bee's goal is to get as much pollen as it can back to the hive. Honey bees produce honey and honeycomb. Native bees do not make honey, however, they are more important than honey bees in terms of pollinating our food supply – our fruit trees, berries, herbs and vegetable gardens. This episode shares ideas on how to raise native bees and help them overcome today's environmental challenges.
While considering honey beekeeping a couple years ago, Susannah Otocki learned about native bees and decided to raise mason bees and leafcutter bees instead. She found the work was easier, less costly and more productive. Susannah is a Board Certified Polarity Therapist, Sound Practitioner, Massage Therapist and a Certified Body-Mind Method Coach. She grew up on a small farm in Massachusetts, where her family raised their own vegetables and meat. Living on the farm she developed a deep connection with the seasonal cycles of the earth, and this is where her lifelong love and respect of nature began. Susannah is eager to share her wisdom.INFORMATION RESOURCESFOR TAKING ACTIONFind free resources for educators - https://crownbees.com/free-resources-for-educators/Shop for books about native bees - https://crownbees.com/books-and-merch/Purchase native bee keeping materials - https://crownbees.com/Sign up for BeeMail - https://crownbees.com/beemail/Learn more about Susannah Otocki - https://bluelotusmoonholistic.com/about/Order the book Shining a Light on Grief -Purchase a Food Forest Design and work with a certified permaculture designer to start the design process – https://foodforestabundance.com/get-started/?ref=WENDYFACHONFollow the Story Walking Radio Hour and Food Forest Abundance on the UNITE multimedia channel - https://unite.live/channels/story-walking-radio-hour/story-walking-radio-hourJoin the Story Walking Radio Hour group on facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/StoryWalkingRadio

Lawns into Meadows: Rebuilding BiodiversityGuest Owen Wormser, Landscape Designer, Abound DesignImagine planting native wildflowers in pots on a terrace or transforming a section of your high-maintenance lifeless lawn into a low maintenance meadow habitat, rich with biodiversity. Recent satellite photographs show that lawns now occupy 45.6 million acres, about three times the size of New Jersey, making the American lawn the largest irrigated crop in the U.S. in terms of surface area. Perfectly manicured grass lawns were marketed as an essential feature of the American dream in the 1940's and 50's. Today, lawn maintenance demands evermore precious resources - time, money and water. Lawns require labor, expensive motorized equipment and fuel consumption. They also involve toxic treatment applications – synthetic fertilizers, weed killers and insecticides – that poison life.In this episode landscape designer Owen Wormser explains how to replace the deadscape we call lawn with beautiful, low-maintenance meadows, that sequester far more carbon than a lawn. Owen is the author of Lawn into Meadows: Growing a regenerative landscape, an award-winning book published by Chelsea Green. Owen received a degree in landscape architecture in 1998 before founding his own landscape business, Abound Design. He offers consulting, installation and sustainable landscape design services inspired by permaculture and deep ecology. His work serves as a means for sharing his deep connection with nature, while further cultivating that connection within himself. He actively practices the skills and perspectives necessary to effectively weave people and the natural world back together.MEADOW GARDENING RESOURCESPurchase Owen's book, Lawn into Meadows - https://stonepierpress.org/store/lawns-into-meadows-second-editionVisit Owen's Abound Design website - https://abounddesign.com/Download the Meadowscaping Activity Guide from Kids Gardening - https://kidsgardening.org/the-latest-meadowscaping/Shop for seeds and plants at American Meadows - https://www.americanmeadows.com/View this Pesticide Action Network webinar on Pesticides and Climate Change - https://www.panna.org/resources/webinar-recording-pesticides-and-climate-changePerusePollinator Pathway native plant lists - https://www.pollinator-pathway.org/native-pollinator-plant-listsTake the NO MOW MAY Challenge - https://www.pollinator-pathway.org/rethink-your-lawnFollow ReSeedingRI on instagram.Join the Story Walking Radio Hour group on facebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/StoryWalkingRadioLearn more about Food Forest Abundance – https://foodforestabundance.com/get-started/?ref=WENDYFACHON

Agrohomeopathy for Healthier Farms and GardensGuest Kristina White, Co-founder and Homeopathic Educator, Our Life and LandAgrohomeopathy applies the natural remedies and protocols of homeopathy to improve the health and vitality of pets, livestock, wildlife and plants. Many of the founders and teachers of homeopathic medicine were trained physicians well-versed in biblical scripture, where ancient healing wisdom was derived from time-honored experience with natural substances. Remedies stimulate the natural healing responses of live biological organisms. An entertaining and revelatory story walk, guided by biblical verse, sets the stage for our discussion of life, land, health and agrohomeopathy.Special guest Kristina White is a Homeopathic Educator and Co-founder at Your Life and Land in Rochester, MA. In Kris's own words, “Agrohomeopathy is an inexpensive, chemical free, non-toxic method of healing and protecting plants and agricultural resources from pests and disease.” She articulates the principles of homeopathy and Hering's Law. This leads to a practical discussion on individualized treatment for people, animals and plants, which Kris explains through stories and examples drawn from her own practice.Kris is a best-selling coauthor of Wealth Codes: Sacred Strategies for Abundance. Through her work in natural health, agriculture and over 25+ years as a consultant and educator, Kris's ongoing goal is to educate people on the benefits of eating real food, the importance of natural health options in the home and the need for each of us to educate ourselves and trust our own abilities and intuition.INFORMATION RESOURCESRead Wendy's photoblog to view the Storied Windows and follow the trail of clues - https://wendyfachon.blog/2019/05/10/writing-to-angels/Support agrohomeopathy research and learn more about it; subscribe to a community membership with Your Life and Land - https://www.yourlifeandland.com/Order a Plant & Garden Agro-Kit of homepathic remedies - https://www.yourlifeandland.com/product-page/Agro-kitBook an assessment or a class at Your Life and Land - https://www.yourlifeandland.com/book-onlineExpand your learning with Homeopathy for Farm and Garden, by Vaikunthanath Das Kaviraj; - https://www.narayana-verlag.com/Homeopathy-for-Farm-and-Garden-Vaikunthanath-Das-Kaviraj/b8241

Backyard Farming for Self-SufficiencyGuest Michael Mandeville, Farmer, KNMFARMSBackyard farming practices can help solve today's challenges of food insecurity, food price inflation and pollution caused by factory farming and industrial food production. More people are considering raising their own egg-laying chickens, growing their own produce and/or learning how to preserve fruits or vegetables procured from local farmers. This episode's story walk uncovers clues that draw attention to the harms caused by industrial farming and food production, before delving into a rich conversation with a self-sufficient farmer, who has been working to create abundance on his own property.Nature-lover, friend and farmer, Michael Mandeville, and his wife have established KNMFARMS - that's Kristine and Michael Farms - in Seneca, South Carolina. In addition to holding down full-time corporate jobs, they manage chickens, turkeys and fish ponds and produce their own vegetables. They also grow bananas, peanuts, shitake mushrooms and grain for their animals. They use old-fashioned tried-and-true methods to preserve their harvest as pickles, fermented vegetables, soups, sauces and whole meals. With decades of experience in farming and preserving, Mike is eager to tell his stories and share his valuable tips.INFORMATION RESOURCESContact Mike for Advice – knmfarms@gmail.com 401 793-0142Purchase The Old Farmer's 2023 Almanac - https://store.almanac.com/buy-old-farmers-almanacCheck out the following books from Chelsea Green Publishing:The Small-Scale Poultry Flock by Harvey Ussery -https://www.chelseagreen.com/product/the-small-scale-poultry-flock/Wild Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz - https://www.chelseagreen.com/product/wild-fermentation/The Winter Harvest Handbook by Eliot Coleman - https://www.chelseagreen.com/product/the-winter-harvest-handbook/Visit the Food Forest Abundance website – https://foodforestabundance.com/get-started/?ref=WENDYFACHON
