Long Live Democracy! with Barbara Berger
It’s no secret that we are living through a very challenging time in human history where the whole world is experiencing so much conflict and the unfortunate but serious decline of democracy. We see and hear every day the tragic news from the US (where I was born and raised) as to the difficulty so many people are having when it comes to engaging in respectful, constructive conversations with each other. It seems to be increasingly difficult for many people to talk or debate with others respectfully, especially when they have different ideas as to how things can and should be done. Therefore, I believe nothing is more important in today’s world than that we all remind ourselves on a daily basis of the importance of the basic democratic principles upon which our societies here in the West are based. And that we continually ask ourselves how well we are doing (each one of us) when it comes to having respectful conversations and exchanges of ideas with our friends, family members and colleagues at work.
Once we understand that it’s just as important to practice the basic democratic principles in our families, couple relationships and other close relationships as it is to practice them in our society in general, the question arises as to how these democratic principles actually play out in our relationships in practice? In other words, most specifically and concretely, how do we talk, act and treat each other when democratic principles and respect are our starting point? I try to answer these very important questions about how to apply these basic democratic principles in our closest relationships in my latest book “Healthy Models for Relationships – the Basic Principles Behind Good Relationships With Your Partner, Family, Parents, Children, Friends, Colleagues and All the Other People in Your Life”. For more about the book, click here: https://beamteam.com/en/barbara/healthy_models.html
What do healthy relationships look like? Most of the difficulties we face on a daily basis have to do with our relationships – be it with our partners, families, children, parents – or with our friends, neighbors or colleagues at work. This is why most of us really want to know how we can best get along with other people. What do healthy couple relationships look like? What do healthy families look like? What are the characteristics of respectful, constructive conversations? How can we best navigate through the challenges we meet in our daily lives and disagree with our friends, colleagues and families in a respectful way without running away or going on the attack? Is it possible to speak respectfully and reach compromises which function for everyone involved? In short, what do healthy relationships look like? Barbara Berger’s answer to these important questions are her Healthy Models which describe what healthy relationships look like in practice. The value of these Healthy Models is that when we have clear models of how healthy behavior looks, we can then compare our own relationships to these models and identify what is not working in our relationships. And this can be a big help because then we can begin to work to improve our relationships. The book is packed with practical techniques and exercises.
About Barbara BergerAmerican-born Barbara Berger is the best-selling author of “The Road to Power – Fast Food for the Soul” (published in 30 languages), “Are You Happy Now? 10 Ways to Live a Happy Life” (published in 21 languages), “The Awakening Human Being – A Guide to the Power of Mind”, and “Find and Follow Your Inner Compass”. Barbara’s latest books include “Healthy Models for Relationships – the Basic Principles Behind Good Relationships With Your Partner, Family, Parents, Children, Friends, Colleagues and All the Other People in Your Life” and her autobiography entitled “My Road to Power – Sex, Trauma & Higher Consciousness”. This One’s For You: An Inspirational Journey Through Addiction, Death, and Meaning with Jeff Johnston
On October 4, 2016, Jeff lost his son, Seth, age 23, to fentanyl poisoning. Recognizing his own addictions to alcohol and gambling, Jeff took a stand on December 24, 2017, and committed himself mental health advocacy. He launched The Undeterred Podcast in 2020 and founded The Choices Network, a nonprofit that promotes and encourages healthy lifestyle choices for teens and young adults. In September of 2020, he published his first book, This One’s For You: An Inspirational Journey Through Addiction, Death, and Meaning. But he wasn’t finished.
On June 29, 2021, Jeff lost his wife, Prudence, age 46, to alcoholism. Still undeterred and determined, on May 12th, 2022, he embarked on The Living Undeterred Tour, a 95-day, 20,000-mile odyssey across the United States to share stories and to find more ways to make a difference in people’s lives. In September of 2023, he launched Brightn, a mental-wellness app for young adults that targets three areas of optimal mental wellness — health, wealth, and purpose. The app is named for Brighton, Seth’s daughter, who was born three weeks after Seth died.
Jeff sold the investment company he founded at age 23 to focus on Brightn. He’s also part-owner of Tribute Kicks, a retail store and vintage clothing company in Coralville, Iowa, with his middle son, Ian. A percentage of the profits are donated to area mental wellness organizations. Jeff lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with his two sons, Ian and Roman.
On October 4, 2016, Jeff Johnston received the phone call that is every parent’s worst nightmare. In a single moment, their lives had changed forever. This One’s For You is the story of one family’s struggle through addiction and their journey to find inspiration and meaning in the loss of a son & brother. Heroin may have taken Seth at the young age of 23, but it wasn’t going to take the opportunity to continue his story. Were there warning signs with Seth we missed? Was the outcome preventable? Riddled with these questions, Johnston began a journey of self-evolution as he began to understand & shed light on substance abuse, addiction, and the Opioid epidemic. In the face of tragedy, Johnston and his family were able to turn their love of golf into a platform to bring awareness and honor Seth’s memory. Death, however inevitable, can be a springboard into a realm of compassion and goodwill for those it leaves behind. It is a poignant reminder of how brief the moments we have can truly be. This One’s For You is a dedication to every lost soul taken by the choke hold of addiction and a lifeline of hope to those who need the inspiration to fight the battle every day. Seth, this one is for you.

Injustice and Grief: Three Profound Lessons with Dr. Cristi Bundukamara, Ed.D. PMHNP Founder and Creator of The Mentally STRONG Method
Have you ever felt your pain was too much to bear? Have you experienced the heaviness of sorrow, and asked, “Why me?” Are you ready to discover a hidden purpose in your suffering? Cristi Bundukamara fearlessly shares her remarkable journey of resilience and transformation. She will show you how to find purpose after loss.
Here at Mentally STRONG I want you to be empowered by our model of providing psychoeducational counseling through the Mentally STRONG Method. https://mentallystrongacademy.com/
I have been a psychiatric nurse practitioner since 2000, with extensive experience with clients of all ages. My career began as an Army Medic before attending Florida International University (FIU) nursing school.
I have worked in various nursing positions, including missionary work in Jamaica, Mexico, and Peru. I continued at FIU and obtained a master’s in nursing as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, then continued to Nova Southeastern for my Doctorate.
With a deep desire to serve my country again, I was commissioned in the US Navy Reserves, where I still do.
I am originally from Miami, FL, where I accepted Christ after the devastating Hurricane Andrew. My husband and I have seven children, two biological and five adopted from the foster care system. My husband and two biological children have a devastating, rare, and difficult-to-diagnose disease that struck us unexpectedly, challenging our view of life and faith in God.
Life is filled with joy and pain in varying degrees for different people. We have had our share of both, and we recognize that people are immensely resilient and are never given more than they can handle. We also appreciate that while we have experienced heart-wrenching setbacks through the years, our family has relied on each other for comfort and support. Supporting each other is undoubtedly one of our family’s greatest strengths.

Essential Astonishments and The Great Awakening with Gina Mazza
“Astonishment is the quintessence of life fully expressed. Yet it is something we cannot will ourselves to feel. This is where poetry—the epitome of word play—steps in, suspends us above the daily drift of ordinariness and alights that spark of awe. It beseeches us to question everything. Every verse, versus, vice versa insists that we stop and revere the nuances of this human experience—to see beauty and grace in the pain and chaos. Poetry encourages us to be wilder in the midst of bewilderment. For this reason, it is an essential tool for experiencing the ephemeral nature of life and the One who created it all.” —Gina Mazza
Gina Mazza is a word provocateur and creative muse. She is an award-winning journalist, poet and author of 4 books in the personal growth category. Gina runs a company that helps other writers bring forth their creative expressions, particularly in the spirituality/consciousness/wellness space. Her offerings include ghostwriting, editing, publishing consulting, book promotion and branding. Gina’s inward path has led her around the world, exploring and working within intentional and eco-communities, sacred sites and creative incubators with others in the realms of quantum storytelling, spirituality, film, the healing arts and ancient wisdom traditions. She has interviewed and co-written with a diversity of thought leaders—including physicians, PhDs, research scientists, theologians, politicians, mythologists, conscious evolutionists, CEOs, pro athletes and change agents. Gina also has a solid background in business/entrepreneurship, inspired event planning and corporate PR/media relations. https://ginamazza.com/
There is a reality we all search for—one of true insight, where we feel the inner glow of connection to God, nature and life in all its splendor.
Essential Astonishments answers the soul’s longing to speak with intimacy about the bliss and bewilderment of the human experience. This provocative collection of mystic poetry holds nothing back in elucidating the awe of being alive, facing the shadow, moving through pain, and arriving at a place of reverence for the simplest things.
Some of the poems read as though rendered straight from the voice of our Creator. Others are the poets’ personal testimonies to the higher meaning of faith, love, truth, grief, dignity, death, presence, home, ambition, inwardness, beauty, belonging, freedom, prayer, poetry itself—and, ultimately, awakening.
Altogether, these poems deliver an insistent call to action at this epochal time in human history. Each verse encourages us to come to a place of honesty within ourselves and prioritize what is essential.
Turn off your devices, open to any page, and dissolve into the flame of revelation . . . allowing these words to purify your senses and illumine your heart.
Featuring original works by Gina Mazza, alongside poets Scott A. Terrell, Donna Knutson, Atul Ranchod, Meredith Lowry and Gershon Mitchel.

Cow Hug Therapy: How the Animals at the Gentle Barn Taught Me About Life, Death, and Everything in Between with Ellie Laks
Ellie is the Founder of The Gentle Barn. She is responsible for the daily care of the animals and programs at The Gentle Barn and has been since The Gentle Barn’s inception in 1999. Ellie is the face of The Gentle Barn and manages daily posts on Facebook, twitter and the Blog. Ellie is also the Educational Outreach Director working with hundreds of inner-city, at-risk and special needs children each year and has directly rescued, cared for and supported thousands of animals that would otherwise have been killed. Ellie has dedicated her life to being the voice of the voiceless.
Ellie began her career working with special needs children and spaying and neutering and releasing feral cats in the alleys of Los Angeles. She started a dog training, walking, boarding and grooming business, that she used as a means to rescue animals from being put down at the animal shelters in Los Angeles. Ellie rescued and worked with about 500 dogs and cats before founding The Gentle Barn. Ellie is also a professional animal trainer and specializes in working with severely abused and mistrusting dogs.
The Gentle Barn is now home to nearly 200 animals in Santa Clarita, California, Nashville, Tennessee, and St. Louis, Missouri, who Ellie has healed, along with staff members, volunteers and her husband Jay Weiner who runs The Gentle Barn with her. Once healed and happy, the animals help Ellie and Jay heal at-risk, inner-city and special needs children, who have the same stories as the animals. Ellie and Jay live on the property together, with their 3 children. Together they get to rescue and rehabilitate hundreds of animals each year and get to see miracles connecting animals and children every day. Ellie attended California State University, Northridge, specializing in childhood development.
“There is nothing more fulfilling to me than looking into the eyes of animals and children, who have no chance, telling them with certainty that they will be ok and then watching them go through the healing and growing process and coming out the other side and watching them become ambassadors helping others who are in their old shoes. It is what I live for each and every day.” https://www.gentlebarn.org/
In Cow Hug Therapy, Ellie Laks recounts the extraordinary journey that started with her first teacher, Buddha — not the religious figure, but a rescued miniature Hereford cow. One evening Buddha wrapped her neck around an exhausted and upset Ellie and transferred a singular form of healing and comfort with an incredible impact. Understanding that this was something to be shared with others, Ellie developed Cow Hug Therapy, a groundbreaking approach to emotional healing that has proved effective for trauma, illness, disabilities, addiction, grief, and stress.
Founder Ellie Laks started The Gentle Barn after adopting a sick goat from a run-down petting zoo in 1999. Some two hundred animals later (including chickens, horses, pigs, cows, rabbits, emus, and more), The Gentle Barn has become an extraordinary nonprofit that brings together a volunteer staff of community members and at-risk teens to rehabilitate abandoned and/or abused animals. As Ellie teaches the volunteers to care for the animals, they learn a new language of healing that works wonders on the humans as well.
