It’s Time for Slow Medicine – A Conversation with Michael Finkelstein, MD
Michael Finkelstein, MD, FACP, ABIHM, aka The Slow Medicine Doctor, has been featured in top media outlets including The New York Times, CNN, and ABC News. Following his medical training he studied with integrative medicine pioneer Andrew Weil, MD.
Today we will explore the value of Slow Medicine, the holistic way of approaching human health that treats the whole person – body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Dr Finkelstein shows how widely accepted this approach is becoming – in fact, he is the Medical Director of several major hospitals and health institutes, including two Integrative Medicine hospital departments/programs that he founded.
Drawing from this diverse medical expertise, Dr. Finkelstein offers both a micro and macro point of view on today’s healthcare needs and challenges, and he provides a tried-and-true solution for healing individual patients and the medical
system as a whole: Slow Medicine.
You will learn what Slow Medicine is, and how healing takes place when we live from the heart with passion and purpose. Everything is inter-dependent—muscles
and nerves, bodies and minds, people and planet – and each connecting thread has a domino effect on the other. To achieve and sustain optimal health, we need perspective that goes beyond the obvious symptoms. We need to become aware of each area of our lives and explore how to optimize our wellness, not only within each of these areas – through nutrient-dense foods, a loving partner, artistic expression, and so on – but also through their harmonious integration.
The best “quick fix” for your health, it turns out, is not a quick fix at all; rather, it is Slow Medicine – a methodical, step-by-step process of asking questions that lead to awareness that turns into action that results in optimal health.

The Gaea Star Crystal Show
Friday Aug 28, 2015
Friday Aug 28, 2015
Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #178 is recorded at Singing Bridge Studios in Worthington, Massachusetts and features the Gaea Star Band presenting several improvs and songs from Mariam Massaro. We begin with Mariam on baritone ukelele, harmonica and vocals, Craig Harris on congas and Robert Sherwood on piano for the languid, leisurely, bluesy “Common Sense”. For the Hawaiian-flavored “Merrily We Flow Around” Mariam picks up the little uke and Dameron Midgett joins us on Kalimba for the mysterious, floating “Goldenrods and Day Lilies”. We return from the break with Dameron on mandolin, Mariam on the Celtic harp and Craig moving to marimba on the moving, African-flavored ballad “Rushing Water”. Echoed piano melds with the harp in a beautiful, delicate evocation of the river. “Eternity” is today’s mult-movement epic, alternately ancient and modern, distinguished by Mariam’s work on native flute and Craig’s foundational congas.

My Journey With Breast Cancer, Healing Within with Michael W. Kovarik
Michael was an elementary teacher for thirty-four years. His passage with breast cancer began in 2007. It was with a second diagnosis in 2010 that Michael embarked on this journey to heal within. Michael continues his journey in Greenwich, New York, where he lives with his partner, Tim, and their dogs, Polar and Macy.
The doctor’s words hung in the air. I couldn’t wrap my head around them. Breast Cancer…but I’m a man…men don’t get breast cancer…do they? In late 2006 I discovered a lump on my left breast. At my yearly physical my GP recommended I have it removed-it was most likely a cyst. Fear took control and I decided to wait. I didn’t have to wait long. Within a few weeks my left nipple was inverted and off to the
surgeon I went. There I was in January 2007 receiving the news. For the next four and a half years I dealt with surgeries, a major decision to either having surgery to remove my left nipple or radiation, Tamoxifen, mammograms, the BRCA 2 gene, more doctors, and a struggle with body image. I focused on that magical five-year mark when I would be done with cancer, the drugs, and the struggle.
As you can see denial was my partner. But in 2010 a second occurrence of the cancer was discovered. I had a hard time wrapping my head around this disease the first time and this time it was more defined. “How?” I kept asking myself. How could this be-I’ve been going to the doctors, the blood work, the Tamoxifen, and the cancer returned? How?
My new oncologist stated that they really did not know what to do with men who have been on Tamoxifen and the cancer returned. I was put on a stronger drug and a six and a half week therapy of radiation. Within a week of the drug’s introduction to my body, the noted side effects made their presence known. For the next few months an intense struggle with the drug’s effects on my body and psyche ensued. I was losing me in this endeavor. Eventually I made the decision to heal on my terms. What unfolded was a passage where I crossed paths with some remarkable, gentle, and healing souls. I delved into yoga, Reiki, acupuncture, connected with a physician who focused on an integrative approach to energy medicine, I paired up with a homeopathic doctor, and became aware of any anger and resentment that I held on to. I discovered my inner voice. In this path I understood that I needed to travel through my inner emotional maze, connect with my spiritual self, and heal within before I could heal from the cancer.
In November 2012 after leaving an elementary teaching career that spanned thirty-four
years, I sat down and wrote about my passage with male breast cancer. In June 2014 my book, Healing Within: My Journey with Breast Cancer was published. Now my journey is to heighten awareness of this disease, strive to have male breast cancer a comfortable topic of discussion, and to encourage our medical community to realize the importance of this malady and to see if effective treatments differ between men and women.
I am a male breast cancer survivor and I am not just surviving, I am thriving.

Co-Hosts Inventor Lily Born & Songwriter Niki Singh
Co-Host Lily Born: Twelve-year-old Lily Born saw her grandfather, who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease, struggle to use a regular cup, spilling his drink in the process. Inspired to find a solution, Lily used moldable plastic to develop a prototype that was more stable and comfortable to use. The Kangaroo Cup can be used by individuals who suffer from muscular control issues, as well as young children. With the help of her father, she launched a crowdsourcing campaign and eventually raised enough funds to help bring the Kangaroo Cup to market. She launched product directly to the market on the crowdfunding sites Indiegogo and Kickstarter, where she successfully pre-sold more than 10,000 cups. She was chosen as a member of the Independent Youth Teen Network, Selected as Business Insider’s Top 11-year-old in Tech, and was honored as a “Young Wonder” in CNN’s Heroes Tribute. She is the youngest member of the Catalyze Chicago’s Hardware Incubator. www.imagiroo.com
Lily was invited to the White House https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2015/03/20/meet-exhibitors-2015-white-house-science-fair-1
The Kangaroo Cup is simply a better mug for anyone. Fewer spills on the keyboard at the office, fewer messes at home. Who wants to chase guests around with coasters?

Co-Host Niki Singh: Niki Singh is a 10-year old (4th grader) Indian American girl who has been dealing with bullying, self confidence and self worth issues. To this end, she has written a song entitled, ” My Reflection.” The song is about the importance of inner strength/self confidence (inner beauty) and less about about outward appearance. She wrote this song as she was talking to herself in the mirror. The words are truly empowering for other kids and frankly for a 10 year old, surprising in terms of her ability to express her feeling so eloquently in a lyrical form. She wrote the entire song from lyrics to melody to the arrangement. Her goal for this song, and one of the reasons she went to a studio to record it, is to help other kids realize they are not the only ones who feel insecure at times or feel “down.” Niki’s quote,” Papa, if one kid who is feeling down, listens to this song and starts to smile, I will feel like this song is worth something.” Her goal is to spread that message and encourage kids to focus on whom they are inside.
Niki also has a non profit organization she started “Just Be Me.” The goal of the organization is to help foster awareness and provide support to younger kids (grade school and middle school) to help them understand the importance of self worth and identity… celebrating both what binds us together and what differentiates us…

The Magic and the Neurobiology of Belief – A Conversation With Bruce Lipton
A single cell, like an amoeba, is like a little person. It breathes, eats, expels waste, moves towards the good things and away from bad things. And it has a brain: its cell membrane which communicates with the environment.
Each of us is like a huge community made up of several trillion little amoebas, all working together in harmony (hopefully) toward a common goal – our health and happiness. It is by recognizing the power of our subconscious mind and using our conscious mind wisely that we sustain this health and success.
Just as the simple little amoebas have gotten together to evolve a single organism (us), the human beings living on this planet have formed a single, individual, “superorganism,” and, according to one of Dr. Lipton’s latest books, we are ripe for these spontaneous evolution of the next level of global human wisdom – something quite necessary if we want to prevent the rapidly approaching sixth mass extinction.
Choosing his fascinating metaphors, Dr. Lipton introduces us to a way of understanding the human behavior and our belief systems, and how we can create a new foundation for future growth. Important things are happening under the radar, the emergence of a new global consciousness.
Finally, we touch on the role of telomeres, those mysterious molecules at the end of our chromosome strands whose disappearance brings about aging and death. Fortunately, there are ways we can produce more telomeres, including the five remarkably simple ones Dr. Lipton offers you.

Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #177 is recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts and today Mariam, Craig and Bob, the Gaea Star Band, welcome very special guest Gino Cicchetti from Rhode Island adding amazing mandolin and acoustic 12 string to a series of compelling songs and improvisations. We begin with “Vitality” a dramatic piece driven by a fine performance from Craig Harris on marimbas that segues into “Ode To Greece”, a lovely, stately and spacious improv that follows the lead of Mariam’s singular prayer of hope for Greece in a time of social and financial challenges. Gino excels with a singular style of slide mandolin that evokes the Grecian islands. Today’s central piece is the epic “Mermaids In The River”, a song from Mariam about July 12th’s anti-pipeline all-day event at Singing Bridge that sweeps in with Mariam’s nostalgic ukelele and Gino’s ragtime mandolin. A long, playful, evocative first theme gives way to a spacious bridge and a driving salsa blues workout from the band before floating away with a pretty and classic-sounding vamp. “Currency” is an eastern raga-inflected modal meditation that has Gino picking up the Martin 12-string for some compelling, edgy lead work that is complimented by Craig’s heartbeat congas and Bob’s exploratory, shifting piano. An unusual, jarring piano motif gradually arises and we shift into a driving and suspenseful jam that gives way to Gino’s fiery 12-string licks. We finish with “The Kalimba Song” which features Gino shifting to said instrument as Mariam digs in with the always-compelling native flute.
