Integral Nursing, A Modern Day Florence Nightingale: A Conversation with Barbara Dossey
In keeping with the International Women’s Day theme for 2014, Inspiring Change, we are honored to bring you a conversation with Barbara Dossey, PhD, who Dr. Miller refers to as the “Florence Nightingale of our time. If you have a watered–down image of the original Florence Nightingale, then you haven’t read Dr. Dossey’s book, Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer.
“Barbara is a long time friend and colleague; in fact, I had the honor of introducing Dr. Dossey and her well known physician husband Larry Dossey to my original work in holistic and mind body (integral) medicine back in 1970 – and it is a delight to see how far they have advanced the field of healing since then.” – Dr. Miller
In this stimulating conversation you will learn about the incredible contributions Ms. Nightingale made back in 1853 during the Crimean war (a timely topic, since we are currently tilting on the verge of yet another Crimean war), and the remarkable advances of professional nursing in recent years. If you think nurses are just people who help you in and out of bed in hospitals, you will be amazed at how varied and important nursing really is.
You will learn about the new field of Nurse Coaching, and Dr. Dossey’s “Theory of Integral Nursing.” We will explore the 5 steps of Western Mysticism and how they relate to Florence Nightingale’s career, then we will have a brief guided imagery through these steps in our own lives. Dr. Dossey then presents the field of nurse coaching and her popular Theory of the Integral Nursing and shares with us the emerging global

Saturday Apr 16, 2016
Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #209 at Singing Bridge Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts and featured the Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, acoustic 6- and 12-string guitar, native flute, harmonica and ukulele, Craig Harris on congas and marimba and Bob Sherwood on piano. Mariam’s jazzy “Rainy Day” begins the session with a powerful, driving groove, modal, gospel-tinged piano work and touches of surreal blues harmonica from Mariam. A beautiful, sprawling native flute coda spirals into a final series of praise-filled verses from Mariam invoked over lush, racing, baroque piano phrases. “Running Well” is mystical minor drone featuring acoustic guitar and dramatic piano commentary supporting an inspiring, poetic vocal from Mariam. “Sail Away” extends the languid minor groove into a hypnotic, visionary poem about a sacred journey through the night. “Rainy Day 2” evokes the winds of change in a dramatic gospel setting with a lovely melody from Mariam and leads into today’s closer, a rich and evocative reading of Mariam’s “Burning Ember” from the 2012 “Smooth Sailin’ Love” album.

Healing Cancer: A Conversation with Maggie Creighton
As part of our new series on “Healing Cancer,” Dr. Miller will interview Maggie Creighton, a near legend in cancer self-care. Now, you may not recognize that name right off, but if you have heard of support groups for cancer patients, you are aware of some of her contributions.
Back in the 1970s, Dr. Miller was hard at work developing and teaching his holistic approaches to human health care and healing in the then-emerging field of mind-body medicine. At the same time, back in Dallas, Texas, the extraordinary Carl and Stephanie Simonton were using similar techniques, such as meditation, imagery, and cognitive restructuring.
Although Dr. Miller’s work and teachings explored the power of these mind tools across the entire range of human physical, mental, and emotional illnesses, Carl and Stephanie had narrowed their focus; applying these tools to the single, very important illness we call Cancer. Soon they were joined by Maggie and Jim Creighton, who could also see that by changing the way people looked at their cancer – by changing the mental images people held of what it was that was harming the health and balance of their bodies, they could change the outcome of their illness.
By teaching people tools for affecting how frightened or empowered they felt, what their expectations were, and even how they really felt about death, they saw not only the qualities of people’s lives improving, but also their illnesses.
And the impacts were huge. Sure, this is no big news story now, many years later; we have so many studies demonstrating the value of essentially all of the techniques we were using. But back then it was. Together they produced the self-healing blockbuster, Getting Well Again.
