Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour with Mariam Massaro

Friday Oct 07, 2016
Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #232 was taped on a warm early September afternoon at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington Mass and features songs and improvisations played and sung by Gaea Star Band members Mariam Massaro on vocals, acoustic 6- and 12-string guitar, native flute, percussion and baritone ukulele, Bob Sherwood on piano and special guest Amanda Potluck on vocals an d 12-string acoustic guitar.
We begin today’s session with the peaceful, playful “Across The River Of Life”, a folky prayer to nature featuring Mariam’s 12-string. We then move into the mystical “Building Bridges Across The Water”, featuring a beautiful melody and lyric from Mariam regarding the Standing Rock resistance. The piece grows with lovely and powerful contributions from Amanda to a powerful refrain featuring interlocking vocals from Mariam, Amanda and Bob. A lovely, assertive highlight. “Oh The World Is Changing Rapidly” follows on this day of expressing unity with the struggles of people worldwide against corporate greed and oppressive regimes. This pretty ballad features a fine and deeply-expressed vocal from Mariam set to Bob’s piano and Amanda’s atmospheric percussion. “Hold Me Lightly” is another pretty, hypnotic ballad that introduces Mariam’s always-welcome native flute and “Never Give Up” flows with unexpected twists and imaginative piano work. Next up is the classically-inflected “Water Is Life” which introduces an evocative lyric and more beautiful native flute work from Mariam over a sonata-like series of piano figures. “Into The Shadows Of The Light” is a lush, trance-like piece with more fine countermelodies from Amanda and a sheen of electronic treatments which transitions into the powerful, passionate “Love And Only Love”.
Amanda contributes critically to this song with her bluesy, immediate energy and again the ensemble responds to the climax of the piece with a series of aching three-part harmonies. “The Sound Of Water”, a song by Sw Anand Milarepa from the Osho Songbook, closes today’s show and is led by Amanda on lead vocal and acoustic 12- string to which Mariam and Bob contribute lush harmonies, kalimba, percussion and piano.

PERFECT CHASE: ONE REFLECTION OF AUTISM
Several years ago, Author Steven Manchester met a little boy who has autism--Chase Howard. Although he immediately became friends, he didn't realize then that his life would never be the same. Chase has taught him (and countless others) the true meanings of empathy, perseverance, friendship and unconditional love. Realizing his friend Chase is a true inspiration to all who meet him, last summer (Steven’s family & Chase's family) decided that more people should meet him and learn about autism through the invaluable lessons Chase and his sisters can teach. A childrens book was the perfect campaign, so together with Chase & Stephanie Grossi illustrating, and based on true family events, Perfect Chase: One Reflection of Autism came to print.
PERFECT CHASE: ONE REFLECTION OF AUTISM, is a children's book about a boy with autism. It is a heartfelt children's book about siblings sharing invaluable lessons of acceptance, true friendship, empathy, unconditional love and understanding—as taught by their perfect and autistic brother. Our mission: to provide a realistic story about autism that school children can relate to, with the goal of spreading awareness and acceptance toward individuals with Autism.
Synopsis: The doorbell rings and three friends—Linda, Sue and Bella—arrive for a night of movies and popcorn at Kylie and Jenna’s sleep-over party, all of them excited to kick off their April vacation. After greeting each other with hugs and giggles, Linda watches as Chase—Kylie and Jenna’s brother—fidgets with his hands, shaking them back and forth. Chase is also having trouble making eye contact with everyone, making Linda ask, “What’s wrong with your brother?” Kylie stops in her tracks. “There’s nothing wrong with my brother,” she says defensively, “he’s perfect!”
For the rest of the fun-filled night, Linda, Sue and Bella are invited behind the curtain to get a look into the world of autism. With the help of Kylie and Jenna’s parents, they quickly learn that Chase is more similar to them than he is different and—to their surprise—that he’s able to teach them the invaluable lessons of true friendship, empathy and unconditional love.
Steven Manchester is the author of four #1 bestsellers: Twelve Months, The Rockin' Chair, Pressed Pennies and Gooseberry Island. His long-anticipated, critically-acclaimed novel, The Changing Season, has just been released. Steve is also the author of the award-winning novel, Goodnight, Brian. He has written A Christmas Wish (Kindle exclusive), Wilbur Avenue (novelette), Just in Time (novelette) and The Thursday Night Club (novella), while his work has appeared on NBC's Today Show, CBS's The Early Show, CNN's American Morning and BET's Nightly News. Three of Steven's short stories were selected "101 Best" for Chicken Soup for the Soul series and he is the produced playwright of Three Shoeboxes. When not spending time with his beautiful wife, Paula, or their four children, this Massachusetts author is promoting his works or writing.

Conscious Attention with Carlos Montemayor Carlos Montemayor talks with Cynthia Sue Larson about the similarities, differences, and overlap between consciousness and attention--and why this matters. Montemayor describes how evolution helps us better understand why consciousness and attention truly are separate processes. Montemayor also delves into the fascinating world of memory, dreams, and perception, exploring implications of human rationality based on recent scientific studies. This discussion also touches on the meaning and experience of time, and how a better appreciation about cognitive processes might assist the legal process. Carlos Montemayor is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at San Francisco State University. Carlos graduated from Rutgers University with a PhD in Philosophy and a Certificate in Cognitive Science. His research focuses on the intersection between philosophy of mind, epistemology and cognitive science, and he has worked on philosophy of law and human rights. CITES 2016 – An Old Paradigm. Where is the Hope?
CITES CoP17 continues and the conservation world holds its collective breath. This week we meet Lion Ecologist Jason Turner, Head of Operations of the Global White Lion Protection Trust and get his take on the CITES deliberations. Linda Tucker puts the unfolding events into global context, and suggests a way forward. *As we write this, CITES have just announced the continuation of the lion bone trade into Eastern markets. Lions remain at Appendix 2. This tragedy – this travesty – could speed up the extinction of lions in our lifetime. Did CITES just pave the way for Leocide? What does this say about humanity? Who pays these CITES decision makers? Linda Tucker asks some difficult questions and presents a possible new paradigm. We always have choice.

Relaxing Into Life
Most of us hold on tightly, trying to make our lives be the way we think they should be, resisting what we don’t want because we are caught up in the illusion of control. One of the most powerful gifts you can give yourself is to take a few moments each day to let go and relax into Life. Physically relaxing your body will actually help you to quiet the busy storyteller in your head so you can be more fully present to what you are experiencing. Listen as Mary guides you on how to sprinkle moments of relaxing – physically and emotionally – throughout your day. There is something wonderful that happens when you relax and soften out of the world of control enough to see that Life is taking care of you every step of the way.
