Stories of Elders with Veronica Kirin
America’s Greatest Generation has witnessed the onset of an incredible evolution of technology and social progress. From mere entertainment to life-changing advances, technology has changed the way we live, work, and identify. Sadly, with each passing year, fewer of members of the Greatest Generation are still alive to share their wisdom as the final generation to grow up before the digital revolution.
Stories of Elders preserves the wisdom, thoughts, humor, knowledge, and advice of the people who make up one of America’s finest generations, including the Silent Generation. These fascinating people not only experienced rapid social and technological advancements but also devastation in their daily world. Major historical events like World War I, the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and World War II shaped their youth and molded their lives.
Author and cultural anthropologist Veronica Kirin traveled more than 11,000 miles across the United States in 2015 to interview the last living members of the Greatest Generation, each one born before 1945. Stories of Elders is the culmination of her years of work to capture these uniquely personal stories in the form of a book that will store their perspective for generations to come. The Greatest Generation saw the routine use of airplanes, cars, microwave ovens, telephones, radios, and the internet come to fruition in their lifetimes. Many spent portions of their lives without electricity, using kerosene lamps for light. Their childhoods were simple, relying on outdoors games and imagination for their fun. How they went to school, pursued their careers, and raised their kids was radically different compared to today.

Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour with Mariam Massaro

Tuesday Oct 23, 2018
Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #325 is an hour of visionary, varied, evocative, lush and accomplished acoustic improvised music and songs featuring the Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, native flute, tenor ukulele, acoustic 6- and 12-string guitars and percussion, Craig Harris on congas and native drums and Bob Sherwood on piano. Recorded on an early autumn day at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts, today’s show begins with the hypnotizing, magical ambience of “Like The Morning”, a steady, prayerful ballad built on a relentless groove of piano and congas and draped with lovely improvised melody and native flute from Mariam. Beginning with a mysterious flute fanfare, “Let’s All Be A Little Stronger” is a mystical meditation on resistance in our time led by Bob’s minimalist, echoing piano and a profound message from Mariam on resilience in all things. “The Last Of The Moonlight” is a light and unusually pretty ballad to the moon that skips and plays to the tune of Mariam’s tenor ukulele like moonlight on the surface of a lake and “Nothing New” is a powerful, mesmerizing epic that moves through several motifs to express the beauty of the circularity of the seasons. Mariam plays her chiming Martin 12-string acoustic to set the tone for “Today”, a relaxed ballad that celebrates the everyday through Mariam’s lush vocal and the firm and steady support of the band. “Room Of Doubt” is a classic from Mariam’s “Gaea Star Crystal: Awakening The Tribes Of Light” album and “Gather Together” is drawn from the “Best Of The Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour 2013 compilation album. We finish today with the hushed, gentle “The Sun’s Calling” featuring a gorgeous vocal and native flute passages from Mariam over Bob’s classical piano motifs.

Anita is a contributor to the book Motherhood Dreams and Success with other authors. Anita writes, “At the tender age of five three things happened—my first brother was born: I lost my sister and my house caught on fire. My sister was my best friend and even now, I have vivid memories of her. One day we were playing outside when she was struck and killed by a car. My entire world changed as I peered into my sister’s eyes for the last time. Unable to comprehend what happened, it felt like I was in a black box. I have no memory of the time between the accident and the funeral.

Bernie Talks and Shares Writings of one of his Favorite Authors: William Saroyan
William Saroyan was an internationally renowned Armenian-American writer, playwright and humanitarian. His fame, and his most enduring achievements as a writer, date from the 1930's. He dazzled, entertained and uplifted millions, with hundreds of short stories, plays, novels, memoirs and essays; they continue to charm and touch us today.
Saroyan's talent was first projected to the world through the medium of an Armenian-English newspaper, Hairenik of Boston. In 1934, at the age of 26, with the publication of his first book The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, William Saroyan became an overnight literary sensation. His first successful Broadway play was My Heart's in the Highlands in 1939, and in the same year, Saroyan was the first American writer to win both the Drama Critic's Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for his play, The Time of Your Life. He refused to accept the Pulitzer Prize on the grounds that, "Commerce should not patronize art...," and he added, "it is no more great or good than anything else I have written."

Oct 26 – Oct 28 2018 Rhinebeck, NY
Rhonda Britten, named “America’s Favorite Life Coach” by TV Guide, is an Emmy Award-winning reality television personality, repeat guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and a Master Coach.
After witnessing the murder-suicide of her parents at age 14, Britten descended into a 20-year period of self-doubt, blame, and addiction. She exhausted every form of help she could think of, from therapy and self-help books to energy work and treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, but still suffered from daily nightmares.
After her third failed suicide attempt, Britten arose from the ashes and discovered a new pathway to freedom, a method she dubbed Fearless Living. She has since founded the Fearless Living Institute, which hosts classes, workshops, intensives, and certification courses for life coaches. Through her work with the Fearless Living Institute, Britten brings the neuroscience of fear down to Earth, giving you a path out of the “not being good enough” cycle using the “Wheels” technology she developed that saved her own life. Her website, www.FearlesLiving.org offers a daily podcast and several online courses.
