For Every Girl, Woman or Female Activist, How can We Best Make Our Voices Heard? Could it be, by asking a Suffragist?
April Young Bennet began studying the lives of suffragists to inform her fight for gender equality within her religious community. Interesting, as a member of patriarchal religion, she chose to embrace both her religion and her feminist views, and has been organizing, educating and making her voice heard ever since.
She is an organizer for the activist organization Ordain Women and an advocate for better state and federal laws that affect children and families, addressing the wage gap, healthcare, education and juvenile justice. April began the Religious Feminism Podcast to help feminists of different faiths share ideas and collaborate toward common goals. She blogs about Mormon feminism at the Exponent II.
She is an activist fighting for gender equality on a wide range of fronts, including her popular Religious Feminism Podcast. She sought to explore what enabled these pioneers to succeed against great odds. And how that could inform her own activism, and what she learned led to her book, Ask a Suffragist: Stories and Wisdom from America’s First Feminists asks, “What can they teach us today?” The most striking message woven into the fabric of April’s extraordinary and intimate look at the women who first stood for women’s rights is the degree of support and sisterhood that they gave to each other.
While print, broadcast and social media were the drivers behind the explosion of the #MeToo Movement today, it was women filled with determination to exert their rights joining together that so echoed the journey of their courageous predecessors–Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth-and some whose names may not ring a bell…Maria W. Stewart, Antoinette Brown, Angelina and Sarah Grimké, Ernestine Potowska, and Elizabeth Blackwell.
The result is a close-hand look at these amazing women as they interweave with each other, written in novelistic style, but taken from their own letters, diaries and accounts. You learn what motivated them, what they had to overcome, how they navigated in a world dominated almost exclusively by men, how they collaborated with or had to endure life with their husbands, how they juggled activism and family, and how they effectively used the media to call forth and unite both men and women to their cause.

Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour with Mariam Massaro

Monday Jul 22, 2019
Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #359 Part Two is a session recorded at Singing Brook Studio featuring Mariam Massaro and Bob Sherwood of the Gaea Star Band with Mariam on vocals, acoustic guitar, ukulele, native flute and 12 string guitar and Bob on piano and congas. We begin with the gorgeous, summery “Let’s All Run Down To The River”, a paean to the joys of summer set to a breezy, skipping instrumental bed of piano and acoustic guitar. “Unraveling” is another summer song, this time in a driving minor with ambitious piano embellishments from Bob. “Early Morning” is an R&B based ballad that begins with a lush native flute fanfare from Mariam and is carried on shifting piano figures and Mariam’s inspired lyric. Mariam’s classic “We Call In The Elements” from the “Vision Quest” CD is taken here with an initial pass of Mariam’s ukulele and Bob’s congas and then an overdub with native flute, harmonies and piano. Next up is a medley of Mariam’s “Distant Star” and “This Is The Way” into a meditative, wide-open “Standing Ones Of Peace” featuring chiming 12-string from Mariam and Bob’s questing, innovative, jazzy piano. Today’s final number is the mystical improvisational tone poem “It’s Just That Way”, a darkly playful dirge driven by Mariam’s exploratory 12-string.

“Liberating Yourself from Your Inner Critic”
Each of us has an inner critic--a part of our mind that is embedded in ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and internal voices. It lives through our energy. Like a familiar companion that lives inside us, the critic’s voice can be a central element to your inner dialogue and usually draws from many statements and experiences that appeared in your childhood. To liberate yourself, it is important to question the critic and the assumptions it is making. In this hour, Dr. Cynthia will share important insights about identifying the inner critic, often called the “judge within,” and will discuss ways to liberate yourself!

“Face It, Embrace It, Defy It, Conquer It” with Victoria Arlen
Victoria Arlen’s life drastically changed in 2006 at the tender age of eleven when she developed two rare conditions known as Transverse Myelitis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis. This was an incredibly rare scenario and Victoria quickly lost the ability to speak, eat, walk and move. She slipped into a vegetative state in which doctors had written her off as a lost cause. Victoria spent nearly four years “locked” inside her own body completely aware of what was going on just unable to move or communicate. Doctors believed there was little hope of survival and recovery was unlikely. Victoria, however was not ready to give up. In 2010 after almost four years she began the nearly impossible fight back to life. Learning how to speak, eat and move all over again.
Victoria went on to exceedingly defy the odds and not only recovered but has since become an accomplished Motivational Speaker, Actress, Model, and Swimmer. Her swimming resume includes three Silvers and a Gold medal from the London 2012 Paralympic Games as well as multiple World, American and Pan American Records. In April 2015, Victoria made the transition from professional athlete to sportscaster and joined ESPN as one of the youngest on air talents hired by the company and reports/hosts for various platforms.
In 2016 Victoria’s endless hard work, training, determination and perseverance delivered results when she got out of her wheelchair and began walking on her own despite the lack of feeling in her legs.
In 2017 she continued her journey of movement, competing through the semi-finals as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars Season 25. Victoria is also carrying out her dream of helping others, serving as the Founder and Co-Chair of Victoria’s Victory Foundation.
As her journey continues she has penned her auto-biography, LOCKED IN that released in August of 2018.
At just twenty-four years old Victoria has become world famous not only for her story and accomplishments but for her message: “Face It, Embrace It, Defy It, Conquer It”
Victoria Arlen, Founder of Victoria’s Victory Foundation is on a mission to help other’s. By founding Victoria’s Victory Foundation she wants to provide assistance to help people achieve their own personal victory. While Victoria was living in a physical vegetative state, her mind was very much alive; at that time she made a commitment that if she got her second chance, she would dedicate her life to helping other’s. As a young woman that trained and worked endless hours to overcome her obstacles with the support of her family and those close to her, she realized the importance of a strong foundation of support and being surrounded by those that believe in you. Victoria has started Victoria’s Victory Foundation as a way to provide other’s with their own support system so they too can achieve their victory.
