Difference Makers: Cultivating Climate Literate StudentsGuest: Jeanine Silversmith, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Environmental Education Association (RIEEA)A survey conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that nearly half of American teenagers say they have learned either little or nothing about the causes or ways to reduce the effects of climate change, yet 61 percent say the issue of climate change is very important to them personally. Other surveys find that four out of five U.S. adults support climate change education for young people regardless of geographic location or political affiliation. While the Climate Change Education Act has just been reintroduced in the U.S. Congress, Rhode Island has introduced the 2021 Climate Literacy Act. This local bill seeks to ensure that all Rhode Island public school students become environmentally and climate literate by the time they graduate from twelfth grade. In this episode, we'll be talking about the Rhode Island bill, what it entails and the legislative process itself. We will also discuss civic engagement opportunities for adults and students to voice their support or concerns regarding the legislation. The show will begin with a story walk that suggests ways to infuse effective environmental education into the learning plans for all grade levels, K-12.Our guest Jeanine Silversmith, Executive Director of the Rhode Environmental Education Association (RIEEA), has been working with State Senator Valarie Lawson and State Representative Terri Cortvriend to formulate and introduce the 2021 Climate Literacy Act. Silversmith has a background in both formal and informal education. She started her career as a classroom science and math teacher at the middle and high school level, and then managed the Wildlife Conservation Society/Bronx Zoo’s award-winning Girls for Planet Earth program. In 2010, Silversmith founded RI Families in Nature, a family hiking club, and, in 2015, she published The Rhode Island Family Hiking Guide and Journal. I think this is going to be such an experience today that I feel by the end of the talk, you're not gonna think of yourself in the same way, but this is kind of like a rotor rooter we're just gonna expose and vacuum a lot of ego beliefs that are so tightly protected and so, buried in the unconscious mind and so kept hidden that you may notice yourself reacting to some of the scenes and to some of the words and things that are used in this movie. The movie is going to be giving us a glimpse at some events that took place five years ago but, I think they're very relevant for us, for our forgiveness and coming to peace of mind. So one of our themes today is people-pleasing. People-pleasing is actually a defense mechanism that was made up by the ego, to keep you from knowing who you are. And yet the ego made up the whole world and all the people. So that's the identity or the self-concept, this false self-concept that God didn't create would be accepted as a replacement for the true nature of the Christ of a pure spirit of pure love. So, this people-pleasing is an addiction. It is an obsession. It is the defense against the truth. There's absolutely nothing helpful about it, it's part of the death wish. And whenever you're people-pleasing all it's doing is it's reinforcing your identity as a body, it's a body identification, a defense mechanism that is so accepted that when you start to look at the extent of it with mom and dad and brothers and sisters and children with coworkers with bosses, with everything in this world of time and space. Even with pets like the bodies of the pets are a part of the self-concept, everything that's perceived as part of the self-concept. Even the stars. The galaxies are part of the self-concept, the trees, the mountains, the oceans, the rivers. Everything perceived as part of a denial of the truth. It's as Jesus says in the workbook that the world was made as an attack upon God, a place where God can enter not. So we're going to look at the full extent of that Miss identity because the core of that is a body identification. And then on top of the body identification, there's a gender identification, being identified with as a man or a woman, being identified with masculine traits or feminine traits and characteristics, then it just goes on from there, projecting the world, and the environment and everything is tied into the self-concept. So I happen to think this is one of the best movies you will ever see that will help you unwind from people-pleasing, I mean this is like a scale of one to 10 This is an 11. This is so good for getting at, people-pleasing. Enjoy

Mitochondria and Magnesium - A Cellular Energy Essential- Carolyn Dean MD ND
Magnesium’s role in mitochondrial function is known in scientific circles yet many clinicians have not gotten up to speed with its use and still think of it as a laxative.
Commonly known as the powerhouses of the cell the major role of mitochondria is to produce energy (ATP) in the Krebs cycle, using magnesium in 6 of its 8 steps. But its other roles include:
Calcium homeostasis (which requires Mg)
Apoptosis: cell death (triggered by Mg deficiency affecting telomerase)
Free radical species generation (hastened by Mg deficiency)
Radical species scavenging (assisted by Mg)
Steroid biosynthesis (Mg aids in production)
Orchestrate metabolism (Mg helps digest protein, fats, carbs)
Our bodies make energy by breaking down food into glucose that then creates an electrical charge that is sent across the mitochondrial double membranes, making the inside of the mitochondria negative and the space between the mitochondria membranes positive. This charge potential difference is essentially a battery. The battery changes ADP to the energy molecule ATP.
When the mitochondria fail to perform this process properly, mitochondrial disease results. However, there is no single test that can diagnose mitochondrial disease but apparently, researchers have identified nearly 300 different known genetic causes. Again, this amplifies the difference between the science of the mitochondria that focuses on genetic mutations of mitochondria and treating mitochondrial dysfunction.
An NIH report on “Dietary Supplements for Primary Mitochondrial Disorders” did not mention magnesium being used as a treatment.
The first mitochondrial DNA disease was identified nearly 30 years ago, leading to an entirely new medical field. Many people whose mitochondria fail to produce sufficient energy have neurologic problems. These can include strokes, seizures, and headaches such as migraines – all worsened by magnesium deficiency. Any part of the nervous system can be affected, including the peripheral and the autonomic nervous systems. Any organ that depends on energy to function—ie, all of them—can be affected. Common systems affected include muscles, kidneys, liver, vision, hearing, the hormonal system, and blood.
Exercise is very important because it can increase the number of mitochondria and can shift the levels of errors in the mitochondrial DNA and increase the function of those mitochondria. When you exercise, your muscles require more energy in the form of ATP that is made in the mitochondria. And remember, 6 of the 8 steps in the Krebs cycle require magnesium to make ATP. Oxygen is required during exercise, respiratory rate and heart rate increase. Both require magnesium. Without sufficient oxygen, lactic acid will form instead and magnesium is necessary to reduce lactic acid. Then there is the fact that it’s the tiny tears from the damage that exercise causes in your muscles that makes them grow bigger and stronger as they heal. Any type of inflammation, pain, or swelling in the muscles requires magnesium in order to heal.
When it comes to nutrition, magnesium saturation and specific vitamins are very important to the functioning of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and all of the enzymes within it. The nutrients that are recommended are B vitamins, antioxidants such as vitamin A and vitamin C, and magnesium.
