HOUR 1
Testing For and Fixing Magnesium Deficiency- Carolyn Dean MD ND
Magnesium plays many important roles in the structure and the function of the human body. The adult human body contains about 25 grams of magnesium. Over 60% of all the magnesium in the body is found in the skeleton, about 27% is found in muscle, 6% to 7% is found in other cells, and less than 1% is found outside of cells.
WOW – why does the body require so much darned magnesium? Well, it turns out that magnesium is not only producing necessary enzymes and working in the mitochondria to make ATP but magnesium is also necessary for protein synthesis at the ribosomal level. The ribosomes are the cellular organelles where proteins are synthesized. Magnesium “activates” the amino acids involved and allows the mRNA to attach to the ribosomes. Magnesium is also found in the nucleus of the cell and is essential for the stability of the nucleic acids RNA and DNA. If DNA and RNA structure do not remain stable you may have mutations in the codes and produce incorrect peptides are none at all during protein synthesis. Energy for the production of proteins must come from ATP as well. Without magnesium available in many areas of the cell, protein synthesis cannot occur.
Okay- so magnesium is super critical! BUT – how do you know if you have enough magnesium in your body to perform all the essential functions for human health? One way to be certain your levels of magnesium are well within the normal range is to get a magnesium RBC red blood cell (RBC) essential mineral test. Another option is to enroll in our GrassrootsHealth nutritional supplement research project and you’ll get your magnesium testing as well as vitamin D, Essential Fatty Acids and TSH/Thyroid levels all through one at-home bloodspot testing kit.
Another way to determine if you have enough magnesium in your system is to pay attention to your body’s performance and symptoms as Dr. Carolyn Dean recommends. By learning how to ‘read the signs’ you can ensure magnesium balance and good health. Clinical symptoms of magnesium deficiency are physical signs that are clearly related to both its physiological role and its significant impact on the healthy balance of minerals such as calcium and potassium. Tics, muscle spasms and cramps, seizures, anxiety, and irregular heart rhythms are among the classic signs and symptoms of low magnesium. Latent symptoms are symptoms are present but concealed by an inability to distinguish their signs from other disease states. Caused by low magnesium intake prevalent in nearly all industrialized nations, they can include migraine headaches, insomnia, depression, and chronic fatigue, among others.
You can also determine if you are at risk for magnesium deficiency through your lifestyle. For example, did you know that most dark colored sodas contain phosphates? These substances actually bind with magnesium inside the digestive tract, rendering it unavailable to the body. So even if you are eating a balanced diet, by drinking soda with your meals you are flushing magnesium out of your system. Fluorides in toothpaste and drugs can also bind magnesium and render it unavailable as well depleting your storage sites and creating deficiency symptoms. Foods, caffeine, sugar, stress, and prescription meds are all within our power to control and manage so that magnesium storage sites do not become depleted.
Finally, aging is another factor in magnesium depletion. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to low magnesium status. It has been shown that aging, stress and disease all contribute to increasing magnesium needs, yet most older adults actually take in less magnesium from food sources than when they were younger.
In addition, magnesium metabolism may be less efficient as we grow older, as changes the GI tract and kidneys contribute to older adults absorbing less and retaining less magnesium. If you are above 55 and also showing lifestyle signs or symptoms related to low magnesium, it’s particularly important that you work to improve your magnesium intake.

Join Us for our Awakened Soul Story of the Week - John Sullivan
We will discuss his remarkable journey through addiction and recovery. What his life is like now and how grateful he is to have had a 2nd chance.
John grew up in a family of five, which consisted of two hard-working parents, two sisters, and the youngest, John. John spent his childhood in Mystic, CT, riding his bike and playing in the woods, the way most of the other kids in the neighborhood did.
He eventually started a family of his own; He and his wife had three children – two girls and a boy. As time passed and John tried to manage a job and the responsibilities of being a father and a husband, substance abuse slowly crept its way into his life. After a long, slow progression toward destruction, John finally reached a point of desperation.
At 40, John finally surrendered and found help. Nine years have passed since then, and his life looks nothing like it once did. With the freedom of recovery, John has been able to pursue life-long dreams and became the man he always wanted to be. Freedom from addiction has allowed John access to a power greater than himself, a power he now understands was always there….inside of him.

Healing Journey, More Miracles and God Guidance with Angela Passidomo Trafford
Angela Passidomo Trafford is a nationally, even internationally, known healer, spiritual teacher, workshop leader, and writer. The author of “The Heroic Path: One Woman’s Journey from Cancer to Self-Healing” and “Remembering the Language of God: The Forgotten Path”, Angela has been featured on several national television and radio programs and in various national magazines.
One Woman’s Journey from Cancer to Self-Healing, How to Heal Yourself of Life-Threatening Illness, Find Your True Self, and make Life work
Some years ago, Angela was afflicted with what she now calls “the gift of cancer”. Led in prayer to Dr. Bernie Siegel’s book “Love, Medicine & Miracles”, she incorporated into her meditation practice the visualization techniques offered there; and experienced a powerful healing. That inspiring story is recounted in Dr. Siegel’s subsequent book, “Peace, Love & Healing”.
Angela’s Healing Sessions via phone: 239-238-1819 medicine card readings, and more
Angela Passidomo had four separate bouts with breast cancer. Facing her own mortality, she embraced principles of love, hope and healing, using meditation and visualization to get to the root of her illness. It was during one of these meditations that she felt a white light moving through her body, healing her. Through her own experience Angela has developed the gift of helping people transform their health and way of living, find their true selves, and make life work. This book is the story of how she healed her body and her life, and a guide to the philosophy and technique of her self-healing process to help you on your own path to healing and happiness. https://www.passidomo.love/
Angela Passidomo Trafford believes she cured herself of a life-threatening illness by getting to what she considers to be its emotional cause. Diagnosed with a six-centimeter malignant breast tumor at the age of thirty-five, Angela was told she needed a radical mastectomy as well as radiation and chemotherapy. After some soul-searching, she opted for a lumpectomy. A year and a half later, the cancer recurred in her other breast. At this point, she decided to heal herself.
‘I regarded that lump as a symbol of the sad life I had been living,’ recalls Angela. ‘I’d been in an abusive marriage. We’d lived in the isolated woods of Canada, where I had no support system. And all the pain, resentment, and sorrow of my life had collected in that area near my heart until, finally, the blocked-up energy of my emotions manifested itself as a tumor. Cutting out the tumor was cutting out my old life.’
Amazingly, Angela triumphed over her cancer. She credits not only the medical treatment she received but her journal writing, meditation, and visualization. ‘I would imagine a group of small birds eating golden crumbs,’ she recalls. ‘The birds represented my immune system, and the crumbs were the cancer cells. I would let the birds eat their fill, and then I would visualize a bright white light entering my head and traveling down through my body, cleansing me.’”

Depression is Just a Symptom that Something Needs to Change with Sandy Sanderson
Did you know that it’s absolutely normal to feel depressed from time to time? We can all have challenges and circumstances that knock us off our feet, make us feel vulnerable, trapped or defeated. Depression can result from just being over-tired and worn out. If we know how, we can recover from these ebbs and flows of life without damaging consequences and without the use of drugs.
How can we actually recognize the danger signs? Do you, or someone you know:
Feel trapped in a revolving door of depression that keeps spinning with no apparent escape?
Have a sinking sensation into quagmire, and can’t see how to lift up above it?
Feel lack of enthusiasm for what used to be your favorite passions in life?
Feel like your mojo has retired, energy is at basement level, and brain fog prevails?
Have a humor deficit and can’t even raise a smile anymore?
Feel like giving up or neglecting self-care?
Then you could have what is commonly called depression. Peter Gotzsche, founder of the Cochrane Collaboration, described depression as similar to a cold that you recover from with good rest and nutrition. What happens too readily these days is dosing with drugs, which can often make the symptoms worse, slow down natural recovery and even make mental illness permanent. Dr. Gotzsche said that the use of anti-depressants permanently changes the brain – and not in a good way.
In 99% of cases, the onset of depression is preceded by chronic stresses or trauma. This is largely due to the fact that excessive stress causes magnesium depletion, and low magnesium triggers anxiety and depression.
Tune in and find out better ways to use nutrition and lifestyle practices in the management of mental health and wellbeing. This is something all humans need to master!
Bio: Sandy Sanderson, B.Arts. Uni NSW (1979) +Post grad studies (business / marketing) (QUT & Griffith Uni Qld) 1992-93
Publisher of ‘This Month on The Gold Coast’ magazine 1998-2009
Founder and CEO of Elektra Magnesium 2008-present.
After her health crisis in 2008 from years of stress overload and shift working as a magazine publisher, Sandy discovered that magnesium deficiency was the primary cause of stress-related diseases. Without enough magnesium cell metabolism and recovery is diminished. Transdermal magnesium helped Sandy to recover from heart arrhythmia and other symptoms of Hashimotos hypothyroidism.
Since that time Sandy and her husband Peter, a formulating chemist, have been on the mission of their lifetime to develop an Australian range of natural magnesium body care products branded ‘Elektra Magnesium’, which is packed full of nutrition and quality ingredients. These products are far more effective at delivering magnesium to cells via skin compared to oral tablets and powders. They also work great as anti-ageing natural skin care.
