Thyroid Basics - Getting to the Root Cause - Carolyn Dean MD ND
Most general practitioners are intimidated by the complexity of endocrine disorders involving the thyroid, adrenals, and sex hormones and refer their patients to endocrinologists. These specialists depend on inaccurate blood testing to prescribe synthetic hormone replacement drugs, which is their main form of treatment.
There is no effort to find the underlying cause of endocrine problems or explore natural solutions.
Even when alternative books on the subject are written they end up taking a very similar path based on allopathic solutions. Two popular books on the thyroid will give you all the details about thyroid disease and explore alternatives but they both still focus on thyroid replacement therapy using natural and/or synthetic drugs. They are, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis by Izabella Wentz, Pharm D (2013) and The Thyroid Connection by Amy Myers, MD (2016). Dr. Myers suffered from hyperthyroidism, or Graves’ Disease and Dr. Wentz overcame Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, so together they cover all aspects of thyroid disease.
Both authors discuss the need to find the root cause of thyroid disease. They recommend a gluten-free diet, balancing gut flora, stress reduction, and immune system support. Wentz says, “Most patients with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism will have weight gain, acid reflux, nutrient deficiencies, anemia, leaky gut, food allergies and adrenal insufficiency. Symptoms of impaired digestion, absorption, anxiety, chronic-fatigue and environmental allergies may be seen as well.”
Dr. Carolyn Dean, the world-renown expert on magnesium and mineral supplementation, agrees that thyroid patients may suffer all these associated symptoms but it’s not necessarily because of thyroid disease, itself. In her almost 50 years of study and experience, she has narrowed the causes of thyroid disease down to the true root causes: mineral deficiency and yeast overgrowth – leading to a breakdown in the endocrine system which always involves the thyroid. This breakdown also includes the adrenals, sex hormones, immune system, the heart, kidneys, liver, gut, and brain!
One of the most difficult causes of hypothyroidism to diagnose is the environmental pollutants blocking thyroid hormone receptors. Thyroid hormones may even appear normal in blood tests, but cannot get inside cells to do their work as a result of hormone receptor blocking. Such is the case with chronic acetaldehyde poisoning, which is a byproduct of yeast metabolism. Similarly, with the female hormones, especially estrogen, which is blocked from getting into cells, even though blood estrogen levels may be normal.
Even alternative medicine doctors who say that the increased incidence of hypothyroidism may be due to environmental toxins don’t realize that magnesium deficiency can allow chemicals and heavy metals free access to our cells or that yeast toxins block thyroid hormone receptor sites.
Tonight on our internet based radio show, we’re going to help you sort this all out and separate the hype and misinformation! At 7 pm eastern time, we’re talking with Dr. Carolyn Dean about Thyroid Basics – Getting to the Root Cause along with a wide range of health topics and safe solutions. You will love hearing the beneficial interactions with our callers and hosts alike including the body/mind connection, identifying the ‘conflict’ in the ‘conflict basis’ of disease and much more!!

HOUR 1
Testing For and Fixing Magnesium Deficiency- Carolyn Dean MD ND
Magnesium plays many important roles in the structure and the function of the human body. The adult human body contains about 25 grams of magnesium. Over 60% of all the magnesium in the body is found in the skeleton, about 27% is found in muscle, 6% to 7% is found in other cells, and less than 1% is found outside of cells.
WOW – why does the body require so much darned magnesium? Well, it turns out that magnesium is not only producing necessary enzymes and working in the mitochondria to make ATP but magnesium is also necessary for protein synthesis at the ribosomal level. The ribosomes are the cellular organelles where proteins are synthesized. Magnesium “activates” the amino acids involved and allows the mRNA to attach to the ribosomes. Magnesium is also found in the nucleus of the cell and is essential for the stability of the nucleic acids RNA and DNA. If DNA and RNA structure do not remain stable you may have mutations in the codes and produce incorrect peptides are none at all during protein synthesis. Energy for the production of proteins must come from ATP as well. Without magnesium available in many areas of the cell, protein synthesis cannot occur.
Okay- so magnesium is super critical! BUT – how do you know if you have enough magnesium in your body to perform all the essential functions for human health? One way to be certain your levels of magnesium are well within the normal range is to get a magnesium RBC red blood cell (RBC) essential mineral test. Another option is to enroll in our GrassrootsHealth nutritional supplement research project and you’ll get your magnesium testing as well as vitamin D, Essential Fatty Acids and TSH/Thyroid levels all through one at-home bloodspot testing kit.
Another way to determine if you have enough magnesium in your system is to pay attention to your body’s performance and symptoms as Dr. Carolyn Dean recommends. By learning how to ‘read the signs’ you can ensure magnesium balance and good health. Clinical symptoms of magnesium deficiency are physical signs that are clearly related to both its physiological role and its significant impact on the healthy balance of minerals such as calcium and potassium. Tics, muscle spasms and cramps, seizures, anxiety, and irregular heart rhythms are among the classic signs and symptoms of low magnesium. Latent symptoms are symptoms are present but concealed by an inability to distinguish their signs from other disease states. Caused by low magnesium intake prevalent in nearly all industrialized nations, they can include migraine headaches, insomnia, depression, and chronic fatigue, among others.
You can also determine if you are at risk for magnesium deficiency through your lifestyle. For example, did you know that most dark colored sodas contain phosphates? These substances actually bind with magnesium inside the digestive tract, rendering it unavailable to the body. So even if you are eating a balanced diet, by drinking soda with your meals you are flushing magnesium out of your system. Fluorides in toothpaste and drugs can also bind magnesium and render it unavailable as well depleting your storage sites and creating deficiency symptoms. Foods, caffeine, sugar, stress, and prescription meds are all within our power to control and manage so that magnesium storage sites do not become depleted.
Finally, aging is another factor in magnesium depletion. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to low magnesium status. It has been shown that aging, stress and disease all contribute to increasing magnesium needs, yet most older adults actually take in less magnesium from food sources than when they were younger.
In addition, magnesium metabolism may be less efficient as we grow older, as changes the GI tract and kidneys contribute to older adults absorbing less and retaining less magnesium. If you are above 55 and also showing lifestyle signs or symptoms related to low magnesium, it’s particularly important that you work to improve your magnesium intake.

Safe Strategies for High Blood Pressure- Carolyn Dean MD ND
High blood pressure aka hypertension is an elevation of blood pressure suffered by more than 100 million people around the world. Most often, high blood pressure is diagnosed during a routine physical exam. It presents no distinguishing signs or symptoms unless the condition is very advanced, in which case headache, dizziness, and blurred vision can occur.
The “2017 Guideline for High Blood Pressure in Adults” set the guidelines for diagnosing hypertension so low that half of the US population suffers from high blood pressure. The three doctors who set these guidelines all have citations in the literature for treating hypertension with medications. These three, as far as I can determine, without input from public health doctors, nutritionists, naturopaths, integrative medicine doctors, or preventive medicine specialists, declared that a BP reading of 130/80 rather than 140/90 is the new cut off point for hypertension.
All doctors have to do is read the literature about magnesium deficiency. A review paper by Fox, et al, in 2001 described the reasons why magnesium deficiency is mistaken for hypertension:
Magnesium deficiency causes a dysregulation of the sodium-magnesium exchange, resulting in higher intracellular sodium and thus higher blood pressure.
A relatively low magnesium level creates an intracellular imbalance between calcium and magnesium, which results in increased spasms in the smooth muscle of arteries and therefore increased blood pressure.
Magnesium deficiency causes insulin resistance, which in turn causes hyperinsulinemia, resulting in hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia.
What is remotely scientific about declaring that several million people are hypertensive without any individual testing or physical and nutritional assessment? At the risk of beating a dead and magnesium-deficient horse, I’ll comment on a Medscape video interview about the 2017 guidelines with two Cardiologists at the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions. In the interview transcript, this quote was at the top of the session, “The day where the physician does everything is long past. We’re just too busy.”
Fortunately, in the last 10 years I have been busy providing the public with health education and safe strategies and our customers are enjoying the benefits:
Sandra: I have been on pretty much all your products for the last year and couple months. I must say, you saved my life. Literally. ReMag has calmed my spasms in my neck, calves and feet. Actually, it has relaxed all my muscle tension. My blood pressure has lowered to 115/75. It was usually 140/85 I was never a sound sleeper and would have a difficult time falling asleep and now I don’t even remember getting into bed at night and sleep like a baby 8-9 hrs. I thank the Lord every morning for you and your products. I also use the ReMag Lotion at night as a hand lotion and love it.
Barbara: I have been going low and slow with ReMag. I have now worked up to 3/4 teaspoon in my 32 oz water bottle along with 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt. I feel as if the key takeaways for me so far are a decrease in my restless legs at night and remembering my dreams. I am on a medication for high blood pressure, so before I started ReMag I took readings for several days. BP hovered around 123/73 maybe a bit higher. BP since starting ReMag is hovering around 115/68. Yay! Taking these results to my primary care doctors appointment next week.
Sharon: I have been on Dr Dean’s ReMag and all the Completement Formulas for ONE YEAR!!!! Wow! My health has improved tremendously…..no more heart palpitations, no more leg/feet cramps, anxiety is gone, thyroid TSH levels down greatly, blood pressure has lowered, and my sleep has improved immensely. So grateful for Dr. Dean and ReMag. She has saved my life. No drugs here just HER FORMULAS. Love you Dr. Dean.
Linda: Friday will be the end of my fourth week on The Total Body ReSet (ReMag, ReMyte, ReAline, ReStructure, RnA ReSet Drops). Although very fatigued today, yesterday I had a great day. I had forgotten what it was like to feel good. It was more than just that though. I was aware of my entire body being rejuvenated. I wasn’t struggling to breathe when I did my treadmill. My thinking was not foggy and the night before I got six hours of straight-through sleep. I haven’t slept more than 2 ½ hrs straight for quite a few years now. Also no AFib for eight days. I have been a very sick little puppy for so long. My husband, a year ago, was thinking about making arrangements for a burial plot. I now have hope I will be around a few more years.
Let me be clear – if you have been prescribed a hypertensive drug therapy from your doctor, I do not want you to stop taking your medication and start using poorly made magnesium pill you get at Walgreens. On tonight’s show I will go into details about how to incorporate magnesium and other essential nutrients into any hypertension program. And for those who enjoy stable blood pressure performance you’ll learn the many ways that consistent, responsible magnesium supplementation into will benefit the body in a multitude of ways while simultaneously maintaining healthy blood pressure.

Beautiful Bounty of the Sea--Omega 3 - Carolyn Dean MD ND
This week Ginney has been working with me in my hometown, Maui, Hawaii USA. Spending so much time near the ocean has inspired us to spend our weekly radio show talking about the benefits of including lots of seafood in our diets and supplementing with Omega 3 when our EFA scores dip below ideal.
In 2020 we all realized the essential requirements of the body for defensive nutrients, especially magnesium, zinc, vitamin D, and the essential fatty acids. As a result we offered listeners a chance to get on board with our GrassrootsHealth (GRH) In Home Blood Spot Test. What we discovered is that most of our customers, including myself, were low in omega-3s and Vitamin D!
We’ve spoken a lot about Vitamin D in previous blogs but what about Omega-3 fatty acids. Studies show that low levels correlate with certain health problems and higher levels correlate with good health. GRH has the following to say about omega-3s:
Over 23,000 published research papers support positive health benefits of high omega-3s, with more than 6000 supporting cardiovascular benefits, over 1000 showing respiratory benefits, and more than 2000 showing a benefit to diabetes conditions. Hundreds of studies suggest that omega-3s may provide benefit for a wide range of diseases, including asthma, depression, ADHD, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Higher omega-3s have been associated with improved cognitive function, lower risk of dementia, longer life, and a reduced relative risk for death from any cause. They are beneficial for normal vision, anti-aging, skin health, maternal health, immune system, brain health, heart health, normal liver function, joints and muscles.
So with all these benefits you would not expect that 82% of GrassrootsHealth participants have an Omega-3 Index level below the recommended 8%. Index levels over 8% are associated with heart health, longevity, brain health, reduced risk of breast cancer, lowered inflammatory markets, as well as improved immune response to viral infection. We were similarly shocked to find that every one of our customers, including me, that did the In Home Blood Spot Test were low in vitamin D as well as omega-3s. We’re just not getting enough in our diet; and the supplement I had been recommending was not translating into increased blood levels which I promptly corrected by creating my own!
One of the tremendous benefits of saturation with the essential fatty acids is lowering inflammation. They are both important fatty acid components of cell membranes that contribute to the structure, fluidity, flexibility, enzymatic activity and signaling between cells.
Hand in hand with reduced inflammation is an improved immune response. They increase the activation of macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells (the first-responders that help identify pathogen or virus in the case of an infection), T-cells (that destroy the pathogen or virus) and B-cells (to remember the pathogen or virus and act immediately to destroy it in the case of a future infection), among others. They are responsible for:
Increasing the activity of immune cells needed to identify and destroy viruses, therefore decreasing the likelihood of viral binding and invasion
Promoting T regulatory cell development and a controlled inflammatory processes.
Inhibiting inflammation, decreasing the production of inflammatory chemicals, and preventing a cytokine storm.
I’ve had a sketchy association with omega-3s, mostly because they make me burp, so I try them, burp a lot and stop taking them. We are also told that fish oil formulas won’t be properly absorbed unless taken with a fatty meal. I’m also not keen on depleting the ocean of krill (commonly used in fish oil formulas). Krill is the major food source for our awesome humpback whales that visit Maui every winter.
Therefore, when I decided to create an omega-3 formula, I had fish burping and fatty meals in mind. I took care of that problem by making an algae-based formula that doesn’t require a fatty meal and doesn’t make you burp! I also took care of the fact that I didn’t have Vitamins A or E in any of our formulas so I snuck those into the Omega-3 Algae capsule as well.
Join Ginney and me tonight as we broadcast from the beautiful beaches on Maui and celebrate the incredible bounty of our oceans, our fish, and algae – a key component in my Omega 3 solution.

HOUR 2

How Magnesium Helps Migraines - Carolyn Dean MD ND
June is National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month (#MHAM), and while everyone has a headache now and then, but not everyone with a headache has a headache disorder such as chronic migraine or cluster headaches.
Twenty-five million Americans suffer from migraines. Statistically, more women experience migraines than men, especially in the twenty-to-fifty-year-old age group. The following biochemical events involving low magnesium have been identified in migraine sufferers and may set the stage for a migraine attack:
In women who have not yet reached menopause, estrogen rises before the period, causing a shift of blood magnesium into bone and muscle. As a result, magnesium levels in the brain are lowered.
When magnesium is low, it is unable to do its job to counteract the clotting action of calcium in the blood. Tiny blood clots are said to clog up brain blood vessels, leading to migraines. Several other substances that help create blood clots are increased when magnesium is too low.
Similarly, magnesium inhibits excess platelet aggregation, preventing the formation of tiny clots that can block blood vessels and cause pain.
Low brain magnesium promotes neurotransmitter hyperactivity and nerve excitation that can lead to headaches.
Several conditions that trigger migraines are also associated with magnesium deficiency, including pregnancy, alcohol intake, diuretic drugs, stress, and menstruation.
Magnesium relaxes blood vessels and allows them to dilate, reducing the spasms and constrictions that can cause migraines.
Magnesium regulates the action of brain neurotransmitters and inflammatory substances, which may play a role in migraines when unbalanced.
Magnesium relaxes muscles and prevents the buildup of lactic acid, which, along with muscle tension, can worsen head pain.
A group of 3,000 patients given a low dose of 200 mg of magnesium daily had an 80 percent reduction in their migraine symptoms. This 2001 study did not have a control group, so the results could be questioned, but it aroused a great deal of excitement and triggered a flurry of research on magnesium and migraines. Much of that research was done by Dr. Alexander Mauskop, director of the New York Headache Center, working with Drs. Bella and Burton Altura, who have been studying migraines and migraine treatments for many years. This research team consistently found that magnesium is deficient in people with migraines and many other types of headaches and, even more important, that supplementing with magnesium alleviated headaches.
Another research team, using 300 mg of magnesium twice a day, treated eighty-one patients who suffered ongoing migraine headaches. The frequency of migraines was reduced by 41.6 percent in the magnesium group but by only 15.8 percent in a control group that received a placebo. The number of migraine days and drug consumption for pain also decreased significantly in the magnesium group. The researchers concluded that high-dose oral magnesium appears to be effective in migraine treatment and prevention.
In 2012, Dr. Mauskop had sufficient clinical success and had published enough about treating migraine with magnesium to title his paper “Why All Migraine Patients Should Be Treated with Magnesium.” Dr. Mauskop enthused that “all migraine sufferers should receive a therapeutic trial of magnesium supplementation.” As he explains, “A multitude of studies have proven the presence of magnesium deficiency in migraine patients.” Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have produced mixed results, but, as Dr. Mauskop writes, this is “most likely because both magnesium deficient and non-deficient patients were included in these trials.
Unlike other research papers that hem and haw when it comes to conclusions, Dr. Mauskop’s paper makes a declarative statement: “Considering that up to 50% of patients with migraines could potentially benefit from this extremely safe and very inexpensive treatment, it should be recommended to all migraine patients.”
Tonight on our internet based radio show, we’ll be talking with Dr. Carolyn Dean about How Magnesium Helps Migraines along with a wide range of health topics and safe solutions. You will love hearing the beneficial interactions with our callers and hosts alike including the body/mind connection, identifying the ‘conflict’ in the ‘conflict basis’ of disease and much more!!

Adapt & Thrive in the New Environment - Carolyn Dean MD ND
I had a very interesting conversation with a practitioner the other day. She said my approach to health, including the Total Body ReSet formulas, was the first she had experienced that sought to help people adapt to the changing environment. I guess I kind of knew that but to hear her express it was very gratifying.
In 2010 when I began developing my first product, the RnA ReSet Drops, I was keenly aware of the implications of the electric effect on our bodies and minds. In my Completement Now series I talk about how the electromagnetic fields produced by electrical devices affects human physiology and what steps can be taken to protect our cells and our mitochondria from the Big Tech Effect. Over the years, as the I have continued to development my Completement Formulas, each addition has been specifically crafted to support our bodies this new environment.
Radiation from EMF’s is just one of the many challenges we face in 2021. Soil depletion, water and air quality, processed foods, and even a global pandemic have convinced us all that we must adapt and adopt in order to thrive in our bodies and minds.
Naysayers may challenge the relevance of supplementation protocols in these challenging times. In some ways, I have a tendency to agree. I’ve seen far too many people who are taking drugs and taking supplements because they are afraid to not take them. Doctors tell people their cholesterol will kill them if they don’t take statins (not true). And alternative medicine doctors often do the same with supplements – or the ad copy you read about supplements makes you feel “less than” if you don’t take every new product that comes along.
What should happen is that when you take something you feel better. That’s what happens with the Total Body ReSet formulas. You feel better and you want to keep feeling better. In my famous blog, When Magnesium Makes You Better, I list all the reasons that you can expect to feel better when you start adding this vital nutrient to your regime but it’s not just limited to ReMag – it’s really true of all our formulas as one of our radio show listeners, Joan A. from Ontario, CA shares in this comment:
I can attest that after a period, if you take the entire Completement Formula protocol, you are covered – in mind, body, and spirit. The problems of the world are still there of course, but your inner-self develops a Teflon-like endurance – no longer fretting over the “Me, Me” but truly from the inner depth of one’s being, the ability to RELAX AND ALLOW happens without effort. The Drama of life continues – that is why we are here – to be part of it. But instead of it consuming us, we can allow it to dance around us and become the observer at the same time as being able to play safely.
Much appreciation to the The Dr. Dean Dream Team: the very best that your Universe has to offer.
–Joan
