The Value of Having a Physician who Cares: A Conversation with Len Saputo MD
Many people enter the field of medicine and become physicians because of the enhanced social standing and the money that can be made, but some physicians enter the field because they love people and really want to bring healing to them. Len Saputo is that latter kind of physician. In this conversation you will learn of his journey, and what he has learned in his 30+ years of patient-centered practice.
A graduate of a Duke University Medical School and board certified in medicine, he did everything he could for his patients at the John Muir Medical Center in the San Francisco Bay area, but for 25 years was desperately unhappy – he realized that he was only treating the symptoms of people’s illness and not creating the kind of health and happiness he had dreamed of.
It was then that his awakening took place and for the past 15 years, he has become a leader in the health/medicine movement, founding the Health/Medicine Forum, a non-profit educational foundation, and the Health Medicine Center, And Integrative Medicine Center located in Walnut Creek, California. In this very stimulating interview, you will hear his story, what changed his mind, and the healing tools he learned to bring into his practice.
Dr. Saputo sees illness as being primarily an opportunity to learn. You’ll learn how Dr. Saputo treats pain as a message leading to the discovery of higher purpose, how he sees his primary purpose as care and support, and how he treats the people he sees as friends rather than as “patients”.
You’ll hear how his wife’s illness awakened him to another level of practicing medicine and how important it was, he discovered, to understand that totality of his patients and how it led to what he calls his practice of “lifestyle medicine.” And you will learn how to provide these principles to your life.
He’ll talk about his newest book, the 2010 Nautilus Gold Award Book of the Year in health and healing, “Return to Healing: Radical Healthcare Reform and the Future of Medicine.” He’ll share with us the level of dishonesty there is in medical research, the corruption in medical organizations, the greed of the pharmaceutical companies, and his other discoveries about why it is that we continue to have a healthcare system that is not at all focused on creating or preserving health. This promises to be a great interview – don’t miss it.

Full Spectrum Wellness - A Conversation with Jack Travis MD
John W. Travis, MD, MPH, completed his medical degree in Boston and a residency in general preventive medicine at Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently founded the first wellness center in the US (Wellness Resource Center, Mill Valley, CA, 1975) and is founder and co-director of Wellness Associates, a not-for-profit educational foundation, as well as the author of the Wellness Inventory Online (wellpeople.com), and the Wellness Workbook (thewellspring.com).
Realizing in 1991 that how we raise children has far more influence on their later wellness than other any factors in our lives, he expanded the focus of his work to include infant wellness. Along with Meryn and eleven world experts in birth and child development he co-founded The Alliance for Transforming the Lives of Children (aTLC.org), which fosters individual and planetary wellness through changing the norms of how babies are born and treated in their early years.
During the last decade, he has focused on bringing together all aspects of wellness within the concept of Full-Spectrum Wellness, where the focus is on interconnectedness, both throughout all the stages of the human development, from conception to death, and within all levels of the environment around us—from inside our skin to the whole planet. He summarizes 36 years in the wellness field with the expression: “The currency of wellness is connection.”
He lives with Meryn and their daughter, Siena (16) in Mullumbimby, New South Wales, Australia.

Excuse Me Doctor! I've Got What?- Taking Ownership of Your Health- A Conversation with Melissa Clarke MD
Melissa Clarke is a practicing physician who has studied acupuncture, been dean of a medical school, and has written a book that should be on everybody’s bookshelf. It’s entitled: Excuse Me Doctor! I’ve Got What? – Taking Ownership Of Your Health And Making Healthcare Reform Work For You.
In this interview, you will discover a bright, compassionate, well-spoken physician who sincerely believes in her work. You’ll learn of Dr. Clarke’s experience with our pathetic medical system: when her father became ill, and the inadequacy evidence by the slowness of making the diagnosis, reactions to medications, etc., and will soon understand something of what inspired her to take a deeper look at what’s going on.
Dr. Clarke will share her personal story with us, and the personal challenge of doing something about the “Passive Patient Syndrome” in her efforts to create “Empowered Patients.”
In this extremely informative and practical interview, we will address the problem of there being so many different practitioners – allopaths, osteopaths, naturopaths, homeopaths, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and so forth. Dr. Clarke offers an excellent way to decide when faced with the question: “I’ve got a new problem . . . where do I start?”
“Healthcare is the last frontier of consumerism,” says Dr. Clarke. In every other area, we are informed consumers. Before we buy a TV, refrigerator, or car, we take the time to do research, and we ask the right questions, compare, decide, and negotiate, but when people enter the medical system, they rarely think in this way. Dr. Clarke’s suggestions are excellent.
What you will find especially interesting is our discussion of the 5 questions you must always put to your healthcare provider.

Ecomind: Changing the Way We Think to Create the World We Want – A Conversation with Anna Lappe
Do we really have a dangerous climate change underway? Is it man-made or not? Is there anything each of us as individuals can do about it? Huge amounts of money are spent to convince us that there is nothing to worry about, and as President George Bush said after Sept 11, “Whatever you do, don’t stop shopping.”
Today’s guest, widely respected author and educator Anna Lappe, disagrees with Faux News and others who disclaim the “Climate Change Hoax” of the scientific community. Known for her work as an expert on food systems and as a sustainable food advocate, Anna shares with us her belief that ideas have enormous power and that humans are capable of changing failing ideas in order to turn our planet toward life.
In this revealing conversation we try to identify the core, often unspoken, assumptions and forces now taking our planet in a direction that, as individuals, none of us would choose. We look beneath the wasteful and superficial “consumer frenzy,” to see that consumption is a wonderful window into our feelings of empowerment, security and connection, and beyond technology fixation to see the importance of relationships in the change we want to make.
Anna shares with us the power of our mental frames, how we have been programmed to believe in the myth of corporate power, and how we can, instead, dispel the helplessness and hopelessness we have been trained to feel, and bring our true power forth. Through her Small planet mission Anna teaches people that they need no longer disparage their actions as “mere drops in the bucket.” Once we’re able to see the “bucket,” we realize our drops are quite spectacular.
Come, join us in this very timely conversation. You can purchase Anna’s most recent book, Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It at Dr.Miller Recommends Amazon Store.

Finding Grace in a Chaotic World - A Conversation with Justine Wills Toms
With all the bad news flooding in on us all the time, how can we stay centered, find grace – and still actively pursue making the changes we need to make in our personal as well as our collective world? This is the question Dr. Miller explores in this fast-moving yet deeply inspiring conversation with Justine Toms, who, with her late husband, Michael Toms, created the now legendary radio show, New Dimensions Radio.
Their show has been the longest-running and most successful independently produced interview program in the history of public radio. Featuring leading-edge thinkers, scientists, artists, healers, ecologists, spiritual leaders, and social architects. New Dimensions frequently hosted Dr. Miller in his early days of developing the field of Mind-Body Medicine. This visionary aspect of the Toms’ contribution is evident here. In this conversation Dr. Miller and Justine review some of the dramatic changes that have taken place in our culture over the last 30 years spiritually, politically, and in the health care system. Justine has just published a wonderful book, Small Pleasures–Finding Grace in a Chaotic World, and discusses this collection of short writings about the simple things that make life rich and so worthwhile. The book is a mixture of diary and essays, a perfect way to make her point: simple pleasures ultimately mean more than grand enlightenment or even sophisticated wisdom.
They explore the important meaning of the African proverb, “a friend is someone who knows your song and sings it to you when you are down,” and some of the research that demonstrates the power of collective wisdom and collective intelligence. Their conversation ranges from the impact of the industrial revolution on human culture, the current danger of “silo thinking” and the need for us to become more connected. It is time to join with friends of the heart–both for our individual development as well as support for our being activists without driving ourselves crazy.

Emotional Freedom: A Conversation with Judith Orloff MD
Transforming the face of psychiatry, Judith Orloff, MD is an assistant clinical professor of Psychiatry at UCLA and author of the New York Times and international bestseller Emotional Freedom upon which a public television special is based. She synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality to achieve physical and emotional healing. She passionately asserts that we have the power to transform negative emotions and achieve inner peace. She offers practical strategies to overcome frustration, stress, and worry and teaches people how to quiet overactive minds that won’t shut off.
Dr. Orloff, who comes from a family of 25 physicians, advocates “a democracy of healing,” wherein every aspect of ourselves is granted a vote in the search for total health. She has been celebrated for her unique approach to mental well-being by proving that the links between physical, emotional, and spiritual health can’t be ignored.
Dr. Orloff is accomplishing for psychiatry what physicians like Dean Ornish and Mehmet Oz have done for mainstream medicine.” Dr. Orloff has spoken at medical schools, hospitals, universities, the American Psychiatric Association, Fortune Magazine’s Most Powerful Women Summit, and alternative and traditional health forums—venues where she presents tools to doctors, patients, and everyday people. She graduated USC School of Medicine, completed a four year psychiatric residency program at UCLA, and currently mentors UCLA medical students and psychiatry-residents-in-training. She is on Natural Health Magazine’s Advisory Board and Body and Soul Magazine had called Dr. Orloff “one of our nation’s top doctors.”
As a board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Orloff blends her traditional medical skills with intuition to enhance patient care. A new edition of her book “Second Sight” (Three Rivers Press, 2010) chronicles her challenges and triumphs embracing her own intuition and integrating it into medicine. Emotional Freedom (Harmony Books, March, 2009) helps readers liberate themselves from negative emotions and develop hope, compassion, and courage. It is a roadmap for those who are stressed, discouraged, or overwhelmed–and for those who are in a good emotional place but want to feel better. As Dr. Orloff shows, each day presents opportunities for us to be heroes in our own lives: to turn away from negativity, react constructively, and seize command of any situation. Her other bestsellers include Positive Energy, Guide to Intuitive Healing, and Second Sight, a trilogy of books exploring new breakthroughs in intuition, energy, and how to combat an epidemic of exhaustion overtaking our world. Positive Energy is a national and Los Angeles Times bestseller which has been translated into 24 languages.

Collective Intelligence, Conscious Evolution of a Sustainable World - A Second Conversation with Tom Atlee
The term “co-intelligence” refers to a shared, integrated form of intelligence that we find in and around us when we’re most vibrantly alive. It is also found in cultures that sustain themselves harmoniously with nature and neighbor. Co-intelligence shows up whenever we pool our personal intelligences to produce results that are more insightful and powerful than the sum of our individual perspectives.
Tom Atlee is founder, co-director, and research director of the non-profit Co-Intelligence Institute. His work focused on developing a society’s capacity to function as a wise democracy. Especially he explores the dynamics of Conscious evolution of social systems. His social change vision is based on wholeness and recognizes the value of diversity, unity, relationship, context, uniqueness and the spirit inside each of us and the world.
In this intelligent and stimulating conversation, we will explore some of the ways we might, with collective intelligence, respond wisely to the challenges coming our way in the economic collapse our culture seems committed to. We will explore some of the ways we can use the elements of the crumbling system to evolve a new one that can serve humanity better. Individual and collective intelligence must evolve together, Tom points out – otherwise we could end up with another system like the present one that punishes diversity.
Ten thousand years ago human beings evolved a set economic, communication, and governance structures that have not changed. But the world has changed dramatically (e.g., we live in cities of thousands and millions instead of scattered tribes of hundreds). The systems that were good for responding to the news that Mary fell into the well are grossly inadequate to respond to challenges like global climate change and the accumulation of toxic wastes in our environment and in our bodies.
Conscious, as Tom points out, creates social systems, and social systems create consciousness – so we need to discover what changes need to be made in our consciousness in order to evolve the systems we need. To deal with the problem of sick children, a medical team is only part of the answer – we need to deal with the poverty, war, and pollution that are part of the system that is creating them. Instead, we sit riveted as Siamese twins are flown to the US to be separated – and leave untouched the toxic wastes flowing into their community creating ongoing deformities. Collective Stupidity!
Public wisdom is what we need, and it comes from diverse views in conversation (as opposed to our current Congressional food fights). We need access to the full spectrum of information – this is the key to Collective Intelligence. Our individual uniqueness is needed to enhance the collective, and the collective to enhance the individual. How different from the stupidity of our current culture of groupthink!
Check out this illuminating and inspiring conversation. There is a growing community, local and online, of people who recognize that we need to be building for the future. Learn more here and at the Co-intelligence Institute website, which offers more than 1000 pages of fascinating free resources.

Social Neurobiology, Positive Psychology and Mirror Neurons : A Conversation with Bobbie Burdett
Bobbie Burdett is a life coach, a trainer of life coaches, director of training for Health World online. The focus of her coaching is authenticity. Among the fascinating things we will explore will be the field of Social Neurobiology. The work of Dan Seigel in this field has verified what many of us have believed all along, that It’s impossible to truly address the health and well-being of an individual simply by treating the mind and the body – that interpersonal relationships are of crucial importance. After all, the human infant – at birth the human brain is only 25% formed, the other 75% forms as a result of pathways laid down by social interactions – with family, school, community, etc. We’ll learn about the central importance of the sensing dimension which has been suppressed in so many of us, look at the mind as a process that regulates the flow of energy within the brain and body as if functioning as an internal GPS guiding us down a neural super-highway. We’ll also talk a little bit about Positive Psychology, and the role of the newly discovered “mirror neurons” that give rise to empathy – and how healing this dimension is maybe the deciding factor in personal and community health and wellness. Bobbie is very upbeat and fun to listen to. Be ready for a stimulating and uplifting experience.

Seeing the Minds Eye - A Conversation with Michael Samuels MD
Michael Samuels, M.D., a physician, artist, guided imagery specialist, and author is one of the foremost experts in body, mind, spirit medicine today. His best selling books, The Well Body Book, Well Baby Book, Well Pregnancy Book were the first books in self-help and holistic medicine.
As a physician, he has worked with guided imagery and patients with life threatening illness for over 25 years. His book, Seeing With the Mind’s Eye was the first book on guided imagery and is the classic in the field. As Director of Art As A Healing Force, an organization which networks artists and healers, he is a leading expert on art, healing, creativity, and healing.
The year was 1967, the place was San Francisco, and the time was one of enormous transformation in our culture. In the midst of that crucible of change were two young physicians, Emmett Miller and Mike Samuels, completing their medical training. There were no guided imagery or mindfulness programs around, no yoga, and no meditation in hospitals and clinics. The concept of stress was unknown.
Within the next five years both these doctors had developed, separately, a holistic approach to healing and both had published books: Samuels’s Seeing With The Mind’s Eye on Guided Imagery, and Miller’s Selective Awareness on mindfulness and meditative techniques. Samuels continued to explore a wide range of healing modalities to share with his patients and the readers of his 22 books, with an emphasis on awakening the healing power of spirit, the role of art in healing, and the integration of traditional and ancient healing techniques.
