The Worry Solution - A Conversation with Marty Rossman MD
Our guest is Professor Martin Rossman, whose work has paralleled mine for several decades, during which time we have been colleagues and friends.
There seems to be so much to worry about these days – from global warming and peak oil to our children’s schools, our jobs, and even whether the food we eat has been contaminated – it seems impossible to predict what will come next.
If you’re one of the people who worries about any of the concerns I just mentioned – or about your teenage kid, your job, your health, or what those people in Washington some folks call “idiots” are going to do next – then this is a show you would definitely be interested in.
Did you know that there’s good worry and bad worry?
Apparently nature has wired us to worry, and so Dr. Rossman explains in his book, The Worry Solution, that it’s futile to try to stop. The good news is that worry itself is a neutral function of our imagination — a reflection of the brain’s ability to look at a problem from many different angles and to identify different pieces of the puzzle. In this interview Dr. Rossman will share the difference between good worry and bad worry, and tell us how to use worry effectively, that is how to worry well!

Beyond The Sandy Hook Shootings – What Do I Need To Know and Do?: A Conversation With Dr. Daniel Amen and Dr. Judith Prager
Following a tragedy like the mass murder of innocent children in Newtown Connecticut, especially on the heels of so many such events as the movie theater massacre in Colorado, what happens? Immediately after we are shocked and outraged. We look for who to blame, and then a polarized argument begins. If we can find someone to fire, jail, or send to the gallows, we feel satisfied. . . until the next catastrophe. Usually we are unable to find someone to take the rap (think economic collapse of 2008). In both cases, we rarely address the deeper sources of our problems, there is much sturm und drang, and nothing is accomplished.
Albert Einstein said, “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”
And Frantz Fanon said, “There comes a time when silence becomes dishonesty.”
I think that it is important that each of us asks himself or herself, “Should I be doing something about this? Even if I want to do something, what might that be.”
Not enough of us “inquire within” at times like these. Instead, we simply add to our internal anxiety and stress, and don’t feel quite as nonchalant about dropping our kids off in school or going to a movie theater or mall. The feelings of separation and disconnection so pandemic in our society increase.
I asked myself that question, and came up with the answer: “I need to use the media tools available to me to pass on, through the global network, all the wisdom and experience I can find.”
Today’s two guests will address two issues – What might be going on at the neurological level in the minds of mass murders like these, and what might we do about finding and treating them? – is the first.
For some answers we will have a conversation with Dr. Daniel Amen, a physician, double board certified psychiatrist, teacher and five time New York Times bestselling author. He is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on applying brain imaging science to everyday clinical practice.
The second issue has to do with what can we do to help those who have been traumatized by horrific acts like these – whether we are first responders at the scene, or if we have to deal with the families or friends of victims, or even people we know or serve that have been traumatized by just being exposed to the news. For some expert advice we will converse with Dr. Judith Prager, writer, teacher, lecturer, and author of the extraordinary book, The Worst Is Over, verbal first aid to relieve suffering and prevent PTSD in emergency situations.
Two fascinating guests and two fascinating subjects. Discover what you CAN do.

Integral Nursing, A Modern Day Florence Nightingale: A Conversation with Barbara Dossey
In keeping with the International Women’s Day theme for 2014, Inspiring Change, we are honored to bring you a conversation with Barbara Dossey, PhD, who Dr. Miller refers to as the “Florence Nightingale of our time. If you have a watered–down image of the original Florence Nightingale, then you haven’t read Dr. Dossey’s book, Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer.
“Barbara is a long time friend and colleague; in fact, I had the honor of introducing Dr. Dossey and her well known physician husband Larry Dossey to my original work in holistic and mind body (integral) medicine back in 1970 – and it is a delight to see how far they have advanced the field of healing since then.” – Dr. Miller
In this stimulating conversation you will learn about the incredible contributions Ms. Nightingale made back in 1853 during the Crimean war (a timely topic, since we are currently tilting on the verge of yet another Crimean war), and the remarkable advances of professional nursing in recent years. If you think nurses are just people who help you in and out of bed in hospitals, you will be amazed at how varied and important nursing really is.
You will learn about the new field of Nurse Coaching, and Dr. Dossey’s “Theory of Integral Nursing.” We will explore the 5 steps of Western Mysticism and how they relate to Florence Nightingale’s career, then we will have a brief guided imagery through these steps in our own lives. Dr. Dossey then presents the field of nurse coaching and her popular Theory of the Integral Nursing and shares with us the emerging global

Healing Cancer: A Conversation with Maggie Creighton
As part of our new series on “Healing Cancer,” Dr. Miller will interview Maggie Creighton, a near legend in cancer self-care. Now, you may not recognize that name right off, but if you have heard of support groups for cancer patients, you are aware of some of her contributions.
Back in the 1970s, Dr. Miller was hard at work developing and teaching his holistic approaches to human health care and healing in the then-emerging field of mind-body medicine. At the same time, back in Dallas, Texas, the extraordinary Carl and Stephanie Simonton were using similar techniques, such as meditation, imagery, and cognitive restructuring.
Although Dr. Miller’s work and teachings explored the power of these mind tools across the entire range of human physical, mental, and emotional illnesses, Carl and Stephanie had narrowed their focus; applying these tools to the single, very important illness we call Cancer. Soon they were joined by Maggie and Jim Creighton, who could also see that by changing the way people looked at their cancer – by changing the mental images people held of what it was that was harming the health and balance of their bodies, they could change the outcome of their illness.
By teaching people tools for affecting how frightened or empowered they felt, what their expectations were, and even how they really felt about death, they saw not only the qualities of people’s lives improving, but also their illnesses.
And the impacts were huge. Sure, this is no big news story now, many years later; we have so many studies demonstrating the value of essentially all of the techniques we were using. But back then it was. Together they produced the self-healing blockbuster, Getting Well Again.

In Memory of: The Wisdom of the World: A Conversation with Angeles Arrien, Ph.D.,
Angeles Arrien Ph.D. has been one of my favorite people for many years, as one of those who has been as interested in trans-cultural approaches to psychology, spirituality, and global healing. You will love some of the profound insights she shares about cultivating hope, uplifting the human spirit, and awakening our potential for collective wisdom and transformation.
Angeles Arrien, Ph.D. is a cultural anthropologist, award-winning author, educator, and consultant to many organizations and businesses. She lectures and conducts workshops worldwide, bridging cultural anthropology, psychology, and comparative religions. Her work is currently used in medical, academic, and corporate environments. She is the President of the Foundation for Cross-Cultural Education and Research. Her books have been translated into thirteen languages and she has received three honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of her work.
To me she is “Angie,” one of my mentors – who awakened in me an awareness of the importance of story, and catalyzed my writing of Deep Healing – The Essence of Mind-Body Medicine. In this conversation, we explore the value of inspiration, challenges that stretch us beyond our comfort zone, and respect. You will learn about the value of surprise, and the creative rather than the defensive approach to life.
Dr. Arrien continually refers to the traditional teachings of indigenous cultures from around the world, and the profound oneness of the wisdom that all cultures have evolved. You will love this episode.

Beyond Health to Peak Wellness –Warrior Pose: A Conversation with Bhava Ram
We all bemoan the pathetic state of today’s pandering television news and newscasters. Instead of their being our eyes and ears to tell us the truth about our world, they have sold out to the highest bidder.
But there are heroes, and today’s show features a man who, in my opinion, represents those fine and high qualities of true journalism in the pursuit of truth, human freedom, and compassion. Listen, be moved, and perhaps transformed, and you will be much better able to recognize what a truly excellent journalist can be. Unless we identify and support quality journalism, I fear our downward slide will continue. We all bemoan the pathetic state of today’s pandering television news and newscasters. Instead of there being our eyes and ears to tell us the truth about our world, they have sold out to the highest bidder.
And what is also quite remarkable has been his adventures in Self-healing – his recovery from “terminal” cancer, broken back, and total disability. You will hear all about it in this conversation.

Great Pain Deception: Faulty Medical Advice Is Making Us Worse – A Conversation with Steve Ozanich
10 years ago, today’s guest, Steve Ozanich, was so crippled by back pain that had resisted every other standard approach, was scheduled to have very serious spinal surgery. He didn’t have it, but instead discovered there was a much more efficient, inexpensive, and effective way to return back to full functioning. Then he wrote a book about what he discovered in the hopes it could help others.
Steve’s book, The Great Pain Deception: Faulty Medical Advice Is Making Us Worse, was an Award-Winning Finalist in both, “Best New Health Book” and “Health: Alternative Medicine” categories at this year’s 2012 International Book Awards (IBA).
Steve’s thesis is that a huge percentage of our pain, and nearly all of our back pain is not actually the result of a structural problem, but is the result of suppressed emotions such as anger and anxiety, giving rise to what Dr. John Sarno called the tension myoneural syndrome.
He then discovered Dr. Miller’s guided imagery audio programs and got to work changing his mind and changing his life. In 1-½ years he was pain free and has been pain free for 11 years.
As you listen, you will learn more about how subconscious levels of the mind, reacting to anxiety, fear, and despair, create pain in the body as a distraction to protect the ego from unpleasant emotions. We will learn more about why it might be important to become more aggressive with your back pain, and how the same changes that can relieve back pain.

A Conversation with Gary Knisely & Judy Schwarz
The wife of one of my college classmates had a brain tumor that had failed to respond to chemotherapy and radiation, and instead of waiting out the last few months of her life with gradually increasing headaches, loss of ability to function, and perhaps slowly slipping into brain death before her body died, she decided that she wished to intentionally end her life, and to hasten death. Her husband agreed to support her, they had a lovely last evening together and she drank the lethal prescription. Unfortunately, reality invaded this tender and vulnerable scene and the system intervened rushing her to the hospital and reviving her – quite against her clear wishes. What happened next is very important, and well-told in the beginning of this conversation. Very few of us would ever want to be in the kind of situation Gary Knisely found himself in – but it is likely that many of us will find ourselves in his situation, or even that of his wife. What Gary has to share with us in this show can make us much better prepared to deal with it.
The latter half of the interview is with Judy Schwarz, who has been trained as an R.N., in addition to her numerous other undergraduate degrees, and a PhD in nursing. Her specialty is dealing with the ethics of the Right To Die movement and the development of humane, respectful and loving environments and opportunities where people can intentionally choose to hasten their death.
Dr. Schwarz explains to us why the term “assisted suicide” is not what we are talking about here. In these cases, it is required that at least 2 physicians agree that the life expectancy is less than 6 months, that the person is of sound mind and capable of making a truly rational decision, the primary reason is not to avoid pain or because of depression, and that the intention is to terminate their lives to save needless suffering of them or their families, as well as to not eat up the families financial resources paying for extensive and expensive high-tech medical interventions. As people grow older, they very often are experiencing the onset of anxiety and fear. Some people are afraid of dying, most people are not. Instead, they are afraid of their last few months or years being characterized by excruciating pain, dementia, knowing that an answer is available is enormously relieving to people, making their last years much more peaceful. In fact, as Dr. Schwarz will explain, 1/3 of all the lethal prescriptions written by doctors in those states where this is legal, are never filled! Of course, this is something we would all rather avoid, but I think that you will find what is shared in this episode moving and personally valuable to you.
