DIPG: Eternal Hope versus Terminal Corruption

Neil Fachon was a 19-year-old engineering-student at Northeastern University when he was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable brain stem cancer. His family was with him at Mass General Hospital when the neuro-oncologist said he had three months to live. “Six, if you start radiation.” With no time to lose, the family searched out every conceivable treatment, as quickly as possible. Neil chose to enroll in a clinical trial at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston. Though dogged by controversy throughout his career, Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski has achieved miraculous results treating many patients with “incurable” cancers, including some with DIPG.
The medical system designed to protect patients like Neil instead proved as intractable as the disease in his brain. DIPG: Eternal Hope versus Terminal Corruption is the first book of a trilogy, covering the time from misdiagnoses to diagnosis, and from choosing and commencing treatment to being denied treatment. Through a long series of moves and counter moves, Neil was caught in the middle of a life and death chess game, against an opponent that was less than above board. This book is dedicated to everyone who feels abandoned by the very institutions we believed were established to safe guard our rights.
Dean Fachon is publishing his son’s story to commemorate Brain Tumor Awareness Month (May) and DIPG Awareness Day, which is May 17. Dean Fachon has a Bachelors Degree in English Literature from Colgate University and a Masters Degree in Technical Communication from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He wrote technical publications for IBM and DEC, and is the author of Grand Illusion a treatise on fiat money. Dean’s wife, Wendy,, is a writer for Natural Awakenings magazine, a contributing author of Shining a Light on Grief, Volume 2, author of The Difference Maker, and host of the Story Walking Radio Hour here on D7RN.

The Jester & Pharley Phund is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping children with cancer and other serious illnesses with the inspiration of David Saltzman’s award-winning The Jester Has Lost His Jingle.
The Jester book and Jester & Pharley Doll have been bringing smiles into the lives of thousands of children coping with serious illness. And literacy programs make it possible for students to join The Jester’s journey to help children in crisis.
Barbara Saltzman, President is filled with such energy that she is an inspiration to listen to and watch. The mother of author-illustrator David Saltzman has worked tirelessly to bring her son’s book to children and adults across the country — first publishing the book and now telling the world about it.
The guiding light behind The Jester & Pharley Phund, The Jester’s Mom travels the country inspiring children and helping youngsters realize that it’s up to them to make a difference, it’s up to them to care. An honor graduate of the University of Southern California School of Journalism, Barbara was an editor at the Los Angeles Times before publishing her son’s book and overseeing the creation of The Phund.

Before attending Yale University, David went to Chadwick School in Palos Verdes Peninsula in California. It was there that he began his career as a cartoonist with a comic strip called “The Chadwick Chronicles” in which he regularly parodied student life for the school newspaper.
He also drew editorial cartoons on local, national and international issues for a Los Angeles Times publication distributed to Southern California high schools. He was editor of the yearbook and a recipient of the Citizenship Award and Drama Award.
At Yale, he adapted his character “Pops” into a weekly cartoon strip that chronicled the life of a fictitious Yale professor. He also spun off “Pops” into a series of Yale Academic Calendars and drew weekly editorial cartoons for the Yale Daily News and the Yale Herald. During his senior year, David was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease.
For the next year-and-a-half, he kept a comprehensive journal of his thoughts and feelings while working on The Jester Has Lost His Jingle as senior project in art and English. Academy Award-winning animator Faith Hubley, a senior critic in the Yale School of Art and one of David’s professors, said about David’s creations, “The Jester and Pharley are extraordinary characters, at once poignant and humorous.”
In his journal, David wrote in November, 1988, that his friends might feel pain at his leaving, but not he, “for I would be like a seed planted in all of them, and when they would think of me, my memory, my spirit, I would blossom again, live again, be with you again, love you again and be alive within you.”
David died on March 2, 1990, 11 days before his 23rd birthday.

Unsheltered: Voices from the Street- Recognizing “Homelessness” is a condition often Misunderstood and Stigmatized
Dennis Pitocco: In my capacity as CEO of GoodWorks 360° and 360° Nation, and in partnership with Peggy Willms, Founder of All Things Wellness, we are now reaching out to media outlets worldwide to help us with a very special endeavor we have undertaken to amplify the voices of the homeless worldwide. Our endeavor (further defined below) is strictly a “for good” versus for-profit initiative. Any loss from this endeavor will be absorbed by us. Any potential surplus will be distributed to worthy nonprofits whose mission is focused on serving the homeless.
From our perspective, the time is long overdue to give a voice to those unfortunate and often mischaracterized and misunderstood souls living on the street. It’s time to dismantle the harmful, false narrative that homelessness is by choice. The most common misconception about people experiencing homelessness is that they want to live on the street. This myth enables apathy and maintains the status quo of too many people experiencing homelessness. We intend to change that narrative. Period.
We plan to publish our Anthology Book: Unsheltered: Voices from the Street in early Spring next year – as a means of changing the narrative of such a complex and pressing issue affecting millions of people worldwide, starting by moving beyond the negative stigma and limitations attached to the word “homeless” by adopting “Unsheltered” – intended to include not only those unhoused, but those whose primary nighttime residence is a place not suitable for human habitation (for example, a city sidewalk, vehicle, abandoned building, or park).
We recognize that “homelessness” is a condition that is often misunderstood and stigmatized and is often seen as a personal failing rather than a systemic problem. It’s time for their stories to be told by the unsheltered and by those who can speak about and for them. Our Unsheltered Series will look upon the issue & challenges of homelessness worldwide, by capturing real stories from real people.
Our Mission
Our quest is to rally our collective talent and resources to materially amplify the voices and visibility of the unsheltered population while breaking down the stigma associated with homelessness. We listen, gather, and share their stories. We change the world by changing the narrative, one person, one story, one day at a time.
Our Vision
It’s time to open our minds and our hearts by doing MORE and doing BETTER, as together, we educate, raise awareness of, and dismantle the misconceptions about the many misunderstood souls living on the street, empowering each of us individually, and collectively to create change for good.

Our Ask of You / Prospective Collaboration
We will individually and together make ourselves available for interviews in any format to discuss the plight of the ‘unsheltered” while amplifying our need for real stories from real people who:
are currently unsheltered/homeless
have been unsheltered/homeless in the past
have been affected indirectly/a degree removed from being unsheltered/homeless (family members, friends, co-workers, etc.)
are familiar with the personal and global effects of” the unsheltered/homeless population
are organizations and causes on the ground facing daily struggles with those who are unsheltered/homeless
All of the above is intended to educate our readers, changing their preconceived notions of the homeless population.
Dennis Pitocco believes that “enthusiasm opens the door, but vision grabs hearts and minds and pulls everyone to the other side.” He carries a vivid image in his head of what our future could be. My Gentle Barn: Creating a Sanctuary Where Animals Heal and Children Learn to Hope with Ellie Laks
Ellie Laks is the Founder of The Gentle Barn. She is responsible for the daily care of the animals and programs at The Gentle Barn and has been since The Gentle Barn’s inception in 1999. Ellie is the face of The Gentle Barn and manages daily posts on Facebook, twitter and the Blog. Ellie is also the Educational Outreach Director working with hundreds of inner-city, at-risk and special needs children each year and has directly rescued, cared for and supported thousands of animals that would otherwise have been killed. Ellie has dedicated her life to being the voice of the voiceless.
Ellie began her career working with special needs children and spaying and neutering and releasing feral cats in the alleys of Los Angeles. She started a dog training, walking, boarding and grooming business, that she used as a means to rescue animals from being put down at the animal shelters in Los Angeles. Ellie rescued and worked with about 500 dogs and cats before founding The Gentle Barn. Ellie is also a professional animal trainer and specializes in working with severely abused and mistrusting dogs.
The Gentle Barn is now home to nearly 200 animals in Santa Clarita, California, Nashville, Tennessee, and St. Louis, Missouri, who Ellie has healed, along with staff members, volunteers and her husband Jay Weiner who runs The Gentle Barn with her. Once healed and happy, the animals help Ellie and Jay heal at-risk, inner-city and special needs children, who have the same stories as the animals. Ellie and Jay live on the property together, with their 3 children. Together they get to rescue and rehabilitate hundreds of animals each year and get to see miracles connecting animals and children every day. Ellie attended California State University, Northridge, specializing in childhood development.

Founder Ellie Laks started The Gentle Barn after adopting a sick goat from a run-down petting zoo in 1999. When The Cardinal Calls with Tim Maceyko
At sixteen years of age, Tim Maceyko was left paralyzed from the neck down due to an automobile accident. With time, movement began to slowly return. Through intense occupational and physical therapy, Tim learned to feed and bathe himself. Eventually, he was able to put his wheelchair away, and walk again, but the accident changed the entire trajectory of his life. He would never play high school sports again and his college dreams vanished. However, he did go on to become a successful youth baseball and basketball coach.
Fast forward several years, Tim is married with three children and is living a quiet rural life. He had moved his family back to his hometown of Cardington, Ohio, a small one-stoplight town located north of Columbus. It was the place that had supported him all those years ago, and he looked forward to the slow-paced lifestyle. But then on March 20th, 2013, his world came crashing down for the second time when his five-year-old son, Seth, died in an accident.
It was this second traumatic event that caused Tim to become an author. He had always enjoyed writing, but now it was therapeutic. He needed to let his feelings out, and the words flowed easily from his mind to paper. He knew there was no turning back, and so, he began to learn more about the craft. After years of honing his writing skills, he finally believes he is worthy of the title of being an author.
With a unique insight into overcoming adversity, Tim has become a strong voice in this area, specializing in loss and grief. He had this to say about child loss, "I've lost my grandparents, my father, an aunt I loved like a mom, a young cousin, and two friends to suicide. Each of those was profound and hard in its own way. However, no loss was as challenging to overcome as losing my child. In his book, When the Cardinal Calls, Tim discusses many of the darkest moments he faced, but he also talks about the signs that gave him hope and how a little red bird helped him regain his faith. He is quoted as saying, "There can only be so many coincidences before you have to stop and admit that maybe you don't have all the answers about what happens in this life or the next. For me, I find comfort when the signs come. I wasn't one who believed in signs or any of that stuff. But I do now."
