We all have a story and mine is no greater or lesser than yours. Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. I was legally blind from birth. In spite or because of that, I went through 13 years of school not knowing what I wanted to do and so I went to Community College and worked in the AV Department. I found out about a job with 'Sun Sounds' Radio Reading Service, for the blind and visually impaired. I not only became a client, I started working there August 29, 1979 and never “looked” back. On March 6, 1996, I received a lens implant and went from 20/200 or worse to 20/80 overnight. Within just a few months, I was learning to drive a car. A dream I had given up in acceptance of the way I was, legally blind. And that was 'ok'. Bicycling was just fine for me. Then my marriage of 15 years came to an end and I met Amrita Ma. We married and moved to her home town of Santa Barbara and we both started a new life 5 minutes for her childhood home. We've been to Ireland twice and dream of living there one day very soon. I dreamed I would drive, travel to far away places, share the love with someone with a very open, loving heart, live by the sea, have my own radio show, teach others my craft, meet new and exciting souls. Bio: After returning home from a difficult tour of duty in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, I stepped back behind the walls of a Massachusetts penitentiary where I battled each day as a prison investigator. Needless to say, there was great negativity in my life at that time, and very little opportunity to heal from my wartime demons (or pursue my dreams of being published). I finally decided to return to college to finish my degree in Criminal Justice. During one of the classes, my professor, Barry McKee, detailed police work, but barely touched on other topics. I finally raised his hand and asked, “As the criminal justice system is so vast, what about the courts, probation, parole – corrections?” Barry smiled and told me to see him after class. I thought I’d done it! In his office, Barry explained, “Except from the slanted perspectives of inmates, there’s no real written material out there on corrections, or prisons.” Barry smiled again and then dropped the bomb that would change my life forever. “If you’re so smart,” he said, “why don’t you write it?” It was the last push I needed to get writing. Nine months later, I placed the first draft of 6-5; A Different Shade of Blue (under the pen name, Steven Herberts) on Barry’s desk. From then on, I was hooked. I was a writer.

Journeying Back in Time as a young African American with Dr. Emmett Miller
Widely acknowledged for his seminal work in the field of holistic health and Mind-Body Medicine (1970), physician Emmett Miller earned his MD from The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and has served as lecturer and preceptor at Stanford, University of California, as well as other universities and medical schools introducing his groundbreaking work in Mind-Body Medicine, mindfulness, and stress reduction.
His chief contributions have been his discoveries of how thoughts, emotions, and mental images can be guided to have a profound impact on illnesses, wellness, and performance. Dr. Miller discovered that the unconscious part of the mind behaves in a way analogous to a digital computer; it perceives, reasons, and reacts the way it was programmed –ways that often produce negative or inadequate results. He found in his medical practice is that self–induced states of deep relaxation, meditation, or hypnosis made it possible to alter this programming through the use of mental imagery.
This led to the development of his ‘Software for the Mind’ guided imagery recordings that soon became standard at such institutions as Mayo Clinic, Scripps, Mt. Sinai, and Kaiser, and are in widespread use by health and helping professionals and centers worldwide.
Miller’s first book, Selective Awareness – Introduction to the Medicine of Mind and Body (1973), introduced his concepts for the first time. In 1977, he cofounded and served as and medical director of the Cancer Support and Education Center in Menlo Park, the first such institution in the world. He has authored numerous other books, including the classic, Deep Healing – The Essence of Mind–Body Medicine, and his most recent, Our Culture on the Couch–7 Steps to Global Healing.
Through the years Dr. Miller has continued to develop his understanding of the healing process, and to serve as physician, psychotherapist, coach, speaker, and professional trainer, and to continue to develop tools and skills to empower people to heal and to do their very best.
