The Story Walking Radio Hour with Wendy Fachon: Thrive Outside
Friday Feb 09, 2024

Thrive Outside
Guest Shannon Rozea, Founder, Thrive OutsideToday's kids are our future, however, denying them access to outdoor experiences deprives them of the learning needed to become better stewards of the planet. And, the fact is, many children are lacking opportunities to thrive outside, because many lack access to safe, beautiful, natural spaces. The Center for American progress recently reported that 70 percent of low-income communities across the country are located in nature-deprived areas.Beyond this, school days are planned to the minute, with little time for spontaneity. Recess periods have been cut short, and time outside for hands-on learning have come to be viewed as a luxury most teachers think they can ill afford. Ironically, research findings are showing that this nature-depravity is proving very costly to a child's natural process of healthy growth and development - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.Guest Shannon Rozea (pronoounced Rosé) is an Environmental Educator and the Founding Director of Thrive Outside. She is also a Landscape Architect and a mother of five, dedicated to passing on a legacy of love and respect for our earth. Her organization helps schools provide their students with greater access to nature through hands-on outdoor learning and nature play. Shannon does this by designing and implementing dynamic "Outdoor Learning Zones" and supporting these zones with teacher professional development in outdoor learning.Getting kids back outside and back into nature requires some extremely creative outside-the-box thinking. Shannon and I share our stories, ideas, guidance and resources to help make this happen.INFORMATION RESOURCESJoin the THRIVE OUTSIDE newsletter mailing list.https://www.thriveoutside.info/Get your students, family, or colleagues engaged in outdoor learning.Search the RIEEA Environmental Education Directoryfor organizations, programs and resources.https://www.rieea.org/resources/environmental-education-directory/Register for a KIDS GARDENING c-Course: Landscape Design for Youth Gardens.https://kidsgardening.org/the-latest-landscape-design-course/Read the Walking Journal photoblogsOrigin Storyhttps://netwalkri.com/walking-journal/f/discovering-my-origin-story-out-of-the-water-and-onto-dry-landThe Pine Conehttps://netwalkri.com/walking-journal/f/the-pine-cone-and-the-pineal-gland

The Story Walking Radio Hour with Wendy Fachon: What is Bioethics?
Friday Jan 05, 2024
Friday Jan 05, 2024
What is Bioethics?Rachael McIntosh, Founder of the Foundation for Bioethics in Technology
Have you ever wondered about the environmental health implications of today's rapidly-evolving technologies? The Foundation for Bioethics in Technology (Bioethics.tech) is at the forefront of safeguarding Earth's natural biosphere while preserving humanity in the face of the ongoing Synthetic Biology Revolution. Committed to integrating ethics and consent into the intersection of technology and organic life, the foundation strives to enhance public awareness of potentially transformative technologies. By translating complex scientific information into accessible language, bioethics.tech facilitates open conversations and bridges the gap between academia and the public.
Founder Rachael McIntosh has a background in art and technology and over 15 years of experience leading conversations on the ethical implications of technological advancements. Having previously worked in the defense industry and contributed to the Rhode Island Geoengineering Study Commission, she spoke to the question “What is Geoengineering?” on the August 2020 episode of Story Walking. Inspired by her work and life experiences, she authored the thought-provoking series of novels, "Security Through Absurdity," which gives us a window into this obscure world and a glimpse of her own fictionalized story walk.
Rapidly deployed technological advances have the potential to both help and hinder humanity. In this episode, we discuss bioethics in technology, as well as how and why corporations and governments overstep the boundaries of safety and human rights. And we highlight the importance of understanding how these technologies work and of taking countermeasures to avoid or lessen adverse ramifications that can threaten our health, our environment, our privacy and our freedom.INFORMATION RESOURCESVisit the Bioethics website - https://bioethics.tech/Contact Rachael to learn more – director@bioethics.techRead the “Security through Absurdity” fiction series - https://rachaellmcintosh.com/Venture “Beyond the Horizon.” Join the Bioethics conversation about SPACE! The Story Walking Radio Hour with Wendy Fachon: Hope and the Power of Agency
Friday Dec 08, 2023
Friday Dec 08, 2023
Hope and the Power of Agency
Pamela Patalano, Holistic & Spiritual Practitioner, Environmental Activist and Community Organizer
The power of agency is “the ability to take action and responsibility for the changes we need to take place for the survival of humanity and this earth.” It can mean making positive changes to one's own personal habits and attitudes in order to recover one's health. It can mean organizing a community of activists to restore the health of a river. And, at a much higher level, it can mean advocating against federal legislation that favors industrial growth at the expense of human rights and environmental health. Today's daunting challenges can be discouraging, and this episode begins with a story about asserting the power of faith, asking for help and stepping into the power of agency.
Guest Pam Patalano speaks about the power of agency from multiple perspectives. She is a holistic and spiritual practitioner, an environmental activist, a community organizer, podcaster, realtor and mother of five children. Pam has always had a calling to help people and to be part of healing this world, in which we must harmoniously co-exist to create a better earth for all of us. She has been involved in many community endeavors to help preserve forests, the rights of others and food security. She has made a concerted effort to educate and help people mitigate the toxicity in their communities, our country and our world, and she engages politically, working with law makers to create "sane" legislation.INFORMATION RESOURCESRead the Story Walking Journal about the Power of Agency: Higher Intelligence - https://netwalkri.com/walking-journal/f/higher-intelligenceContact Pam Patalano for healing work, activism consultation or environmental consultation - Thetreeoflife222@gmail.com & Pampatalano@gmail.com 401-533-1865Listen to Pam's “Awakened Soul Stories” podcasts on the Dreamvisions 7 Radio Network -https://dreamvisions7radio.com/awakened-soul-stories/pam-patalano-archives/Read Tips for Safe Technology Holiday Giving -https://www.naturalawakeningsboston.com/2023/11/30/473306/tips-for-safe-technology-holiday-gifting

The Story Walking Radio Hour with Wendy Fachon: AMOR Healing Kitchen
Friday Nov 10, 2023
Friday Nov 10, 2023
Natural Abundance, Gratitude and Healing
Maria Kelly, Founder and Executive Director, AMOR Healing Kitchen
Making wise food choices influences our health, how we feel and how we care for our planet. With gratitude we acknowledge that the simplest of foods require few resources to produce, and they are considered among the healthiest and most abundant - fruits, vegetables, whole-grains and plant-based proteins. Macrobiotic cooking is about drawing inspiration for food preparation from our natural environment, using seasonally-fresh, locally-grown, plant-based whole foods. When we add herbs, spices and a lot of love, we can create meals with complex levels of mouth watering flavor and effective healing power. Imagine, food as medicine!
This episode features AMOR Healing Kitchen, a small non-profit that provides nutritious, plant-based meals, made with love, by teen volunteers, for people facing health challenges - cancer, heart problems, diabetes, autoimmune diseases or neurological conditions. The kitchen sources in-season ingredients from local farms in the Charleston, SC, area, using organic ingredients as much as possible. Every week Teen Chefs and Kitchen Mentors prepare delicious, healthy meals, and each Friday Delivery Angels bring the meals to the kitchen's clients. AMOR Healing Kitchen empowers teens by teaching them the connection between our food and our health, as well as giving them the tools necessary to carry this knowledge into the kitchen to create nourishing meals.
Maria Kelly, Founder and Executive Director, AMOR Healing Kitchen planted the seed of her organization after a 14-year career teaching high school in Charleston County, where there is an abundance of local, organic farms. Her love for plant-based food, local farming, working with teenagers and supporting people challenged with serious illness forms the foundation of AMOR. Maria believes getting back to the earth, for real food will cure us of many chronic illnesses. Food, prepared with love, feeds both the body and the soul.

Environmentally-Safe Technology – Part 3
Guest Cecelia Doucette, Director of Massachusetts for Safe Technology, Education Services Director for Wireless Education
Invisible and unseen, electromagnetic frequency (EMF) radiation is increasingly impacting environmental sustainability, human health and safety. EMF emitters include cell towers, cell phones, portable tablets, smart meters, and wearables, like fitbits and ear pods. Few people realize how much the growing wireless technology sector contributes to carbon emissions, climate change and chronic health issues. The high energy requirements of wireless translate into high carbon emissions. One report states that “one click on Google uses about 11-watt hours of energy – the same amount it takes to run a compact fluorescent light bulb for an hour.” This episode leads deeper into all these aspects of wireless technology.
The good news is that there are many ways people can rewire their premises and rethink their technology use in order to reduce climate impact, health risks and illness - at home, at school and in the workplace. In Parts 1 and 2, guest Cecelia Doucette, Director of Massachusetts for Safe Technology, introduced the topics of safe technology, wireless education, community action, coalition building and the need for well-informed legal and legislative policies. Doucette returns in Part 3 to deliver more.
Doucette's organization is building coalitions of citizens who act as advocates on a town-by-town basis to educate their neighbors and work proactively with local governments, legislators and state agencies for safe, sustainable technology. Massachusetts has led the nation for several years with bills to address the health, environmental and economic impact of today’s wireless technology. Doucette helped her children’s schools become the first in the nation to take precautionary measures with wireless technology. She is also the Education Services Director with the international non-profit Wireless Education, which offers affordable 30-minute on-line technology safety training for Schools & Families and Corporate Safety Induction.
Unseen and unknown, EMF radiation is the invisible E-lephant in the room that can be made visible with an RF meter, as demonstrated in Wendy's Story Walking Journal photoblog Eco-DEtechTIVE Climate Report: E-LEPHANT in the Room. Check Part 1, Part 2 and the related photoblogs.

The Stormwater Innovation Center: Growing Green Infrastructure
Guests Roy Arezzo, Urban Stormwater Education and Outreach Coordinator, The Nature Conservancy;
Rebecca Reeves, Education & Outreach Coordinator, Stormwater Innovation Center/Audubon Society of Rhode Island
Managed by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, the Stormwater Innovation Center (SIC) in Providence, RI, demonstrates a series of nature-based solutions that address a variety of water quality issues. Cyanobacteria blooms are one major sign of poor water quality. SIC scientists, engineers, educators and volunteers are working together to solve this and other water quality problems. The Center uses over 40 green stormwater infrastructure practices, which exemplify best management practices (termed BMPs). Installed by the Providence Parks Department, these BMPs show how an effective stormwater infrastructure system is designed, constructed and maintained.
Guest Roy Arezzo is the Urban Stormwater Education and Outreach Coordinator for The Nature Conservancy, working in collaboration with the Stormwater Innovation Center. In addition to monitoring local water bodies, his water quality work is focused on prevention and awareness regarding Cyanobacteria Blooms. With a biology background and a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science Education, he worked as a science teacher at several urban schools.
Guest Rebecca Reeves is the SIC Education & Outreach Coordinator with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Working in collaboration with many partner organizations, she is responsible for professional training, school programming and community outreach. Through its education and outreach initiatives, the SIC builds public awareness around stormwater issues and how they relate to environmental concerns such as supporting native habitat and wildlife. Reeves also coordinates events, including the Annual Rain Harvest Festival.

The Story Walking Radio Hour with Wendy Fachon: Love Nature Magic
Friday Aug 11, 2023
Friday Aug 11, 2023
Love Nature Magic Guest Maria Rodale, Author, LOVE NATURE MAGIC
In her new book, Love Nature Magic: shamanic journeys into the heart of my garden, Maria Rodale shows how she came into relationship with the plants, animals and insects that inhabit her garden and helps readers come to understand nature's consciousness, intelligence and high awareness. When people slow down, release control and start paying close attention to Nature, the magic starts to happen. This episode begins with the story of a magical experience with an intelligent and resilient butterfly, and then it leads into a conversation with Maria Rodale.
Bestselling author, activist and gardener Maria Rodale is a board member and former co-chair of the Rodale Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to growing the regenerative organic agriculture movement through research, farmer training and education. She is also the former CEO of Rodale Inc., the global health and wellness media company that has published many notable books and periodicals, including Organic Gardening, Men’s Health, Women’s Health and Prevention magazines.
Under the pen name of Mrs. Peanuckle, Rodale has written a delightful series of board books that celebrate the joy nature brings to young children. Each “Alphabet” book presents a different category of nature: birds, bugs, flowers, trees, fresh fruits, vegetables and more. From A to Z, the bold colorful pages will engage parents, enchant toddlers and inspire the youngest of budding environmentalists and curious scientists.
Throughout her life, Maria has advocated for the potential of organic regenerative farming to heal the damage wrought by pesticides and industrial agricultural practices and their toxic impacts on human and planetary health, including reversing climate change. The underlying theme of Maria's work is this: If we stop interfering and allow Nature to do her thing, ultimately, she will heal herself and us.

Friday Jul 07, 2023
Friday Jul 07, 2023
Forest School Learning
Guests Diana Brennan and Lindsey Baillargeron, Educators and Founders, Northern Rhode Island Forest School
Forest Schools have roots that reach back to the open-air culture, seen as a way of life in Scandinavia. It is a long-term child-centered learning process that happens naturally through play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Forest School Learning is a timely topic that can help support the new Learning Inside Out Outdoor Classroom Initiatives happening in public and charter schools. Many schools have received grants to create, enhance and support access to natural resources for all students in the form of outdoor classrooms or schoolyard habitats. Teachers are seeking outdoor teaching strategies that will actively engage children and improve their language literacy, math, science, creative and critical thinking skill development and this episode will support and inspire that process.Diana Brennan has a B.S. in environmental science and has worked as a wetland scientist for the past 20 years. She has experience with habitat assessments, restoration projects and sustainable development. She possesses a deep understanding of Rhode Island’s natural resources. She is trained as a Level 3 Forest School Leader through Forest Schools Education, an internationally recognized program. Earning this certification gives Diana the skills and experience to guide learners safely and effectively. Having experienced first-hand the power of nature to help us heal, grow and learn, Diana is determined to counter “nature deficit disorder” by getting children and adults off of the screens and into the woods.
Lindsey Baillargeron was a classroom teacher for 14 years, having taught middle school and high school English. She earned her Master’s in English from Harvard University and studied education reform and its effect on British novels. Lindsey is currently pursuing her second masters degree to become a k-12 reading specialist at Lesley University. She is focusing on language skills children need to understand texts in different disciplines. Lindsey is trained as a Level 1 Forest School Assistant, and she will be sharing how she found her way into Forest School teaching and how it enhances her effectiveness in teaching language arts.
