Backyard Farming for Self-SufficiencyGuest Michael Mandeville, Farmer, KNMFARMSBackyard farming practices can help solve today's challenges of food insecurity, food price inflation and pollution caused by factory farming and industrial food production. More people are considering raising their own egg-laying chickens, growing their own produce and/or learning how to preserve fruits or vegetables procured from local farmers. This episode's story walk uncovers clues that draw attention to the harms caused by industrial farming and food production, before delving into a rich conversation with a self-sufficient farmer, who has been working to create abundance on his own property.Nature-lover, friend and farmer, Michael Mandeville, and his wife have established KNMFARMS - that's Kristine and Michael Farms - in Seneca, South Carolina. In addition to holding down full-time corporate jobs, they manage chickens, turkeys and fish ponds and produce their own vegetables. They also grow bananas, peanuts, shitake mushrooms and grain for their animals. They use old-fashioned tried-and-true methods to preserve their harvest as pickles, fermented vegetables, soups, sauces and whole meals. With decades of experience in farming and preserving, Mike is eager to tell his stories and share his valuable tips.INFORMATION RESOURCESContact Mike for Advice – knmfarms@gmail.com 401 793-0142Purchase The Old Farmer's 2023 Almanac - https://store.almanac.com/buy-old-farmers-almanacCheck out the following books from Chelsea Green Publishing:The Small-Scale Poultry Flock by Harvey Ussery -https://www.chelseagreen.com/product/the-small-scale-poultry-flock/Wild Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz - https://www.chelseagreen.com/product/wild-fermentation/The Winter Harvest Handbook by Eliot Coleman - https://www.chelseagreen.com/product/the-winter-harvest-handbook/Visit the Food Forest Abundance website – https://foodforestabundance.com/get-started/?ref=WENDYFACHON

Celebrating Our Oneness with All of CreationGuests Barbara M. Fuyat, RScP, Spiritual Director of CSL South Coastal, MA Teaching Chapter, and Kristina White, CCH, Co-founder of Your Life and Land, Homeopathic EducatorAcross the globe, Centers for Spiritual Living are uplifting humanity through the teachings of Science of Mind, a philosophy developed by CSL founder Ernest Holmes. He studied the world's many religions and identified commonalities. One of the commonalities is the concept that our thoughts create our reality. Holmes correlated his findings to establish a unifying set of new thought principles that are scientifically provable in practice. The CSL community embraces people of all faiths and beliefs, which is a beautiful thing. An emphasis on unconditional love allows everyone to be free to be whoever they are, while also understanding that all are connected in Oneness. CSL is rooted in the Transcendentalist movement led by Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, who both emphasized the idea of human harmony with nature. They believed that nature can improve us spiritually and help us connect to the rest of the world.Barbara Fuyat, RScP, is the Spiritual Director of the CSL South Coastal, MA Teaching Chapter. Her social and spiritual activism is strengthened by her Belief that changing the world begins by changing ourselves and living our principles and values. She has held leadership positions with Concordia CSL and CSL of Greater Boston, which have helped her grow in her commitment to Oneness, Wholeness and creating a world that works for everyone. Barbara leads ceremonies and services at local beaches, parks and farms; without walls or borders, honoring nature as our spiritual temple. She also leads online classes and a weekly “Circle of Intention,” that is open to one and all.Kristina White, CCH, is a Homeopathic Educator and co-founder of Your Life and Land, an online community formed around the belief that our connection to each other and nature (real food, trees, plants, animals) is critical to our physical, emotional and spiritual health. Kris is a best-selling coauthor of Wealth Codes: Sacred Strategies for Abundance. She offers workshops, learning circles, and individual homeopathic assessments for people, pets, and plants. She is knowledgeable in “Agrohomeopathy,” a natural method of healing and protecting plants and agricultural resources from pests and disease. Soil Science and BionutritionGuest Dan Kittredge, Founder and Executive Director, Bionutrient Food AssociationDid you know that some carrots can have up to 200 times more nutritional value compared to other carrots? The health of food correlates directly to the health of the soil where the food are grown. This episode begins by exploring the biological systems that produce some of the best soil for growing food. Then it delves into innovative Growing Partner and Citizen Science programs that seek to improve the nutrition density in our food supply. The Bionutrient Institute has engineered and released a hand-held consumer spectrometer, the Bionutrient Meter, used to test nutrient density at the point of purchase and bring transparency to the marketplace. The goal of this program is to empower consumers to choose their foods based on nutrient quality and to leverage economic incentives to drive full system regeneration. Our guest, Dan Kittredge, is the Founder and Executive Director of the Bionutrient Food Association (BFA). His organization focuses on understanding the nutrient density in food, how to support it, and how to incorporate it into the food supply chain. Dan has been an organic farmer for over 30 years. Through global engagement, he has become one of the leading proponents of “nutrient density,” working to demonstrate the connections between soil health, plant health, and human health through workshops, speaking engagements, social media, a YouTube channel and numerous webinars and podcasts.INFORMATION RESOURCESGet involved with the Bionutrient Food Association - https://bionutrient.org/membersCheck out the Bionutrient Institute - https://www.bionutrientinstitute.org/Learn more about the Bionutrient Meter - https://www.bionutrientinstitute.org/bionutrientmeterVisit the Food Forest Abundance website – https://foodforestabundance.com/get-started/?ref=WENDYFACHON

Growing a Community Food SystemGuest Bevan Linsley, Executive Director, Aquidneck Community TableEnvironmental health, food security and community resilience are interconnected issues. One of the most sensible solutions for addressing these concerns is to organize a community food system. This involves identifying strong partnerships within the community, advocating for policies that support local growers, establishing distribution points to make food accessible to all, and creating community gardening spaces. Aquidneck Community Table is a powerful example of organization. Known locally as ACT, it manages three farmers markets and over 80 community garden plots across the island. Community gardens provide members an opportunity to rent a garden plot for an annual fee and grow their own organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers in a community setting.Bevan Linsley is the Executive Director of Aquidneck Community Table, which she helped establish as a nonprofit in order to bring together partners in the Aquidneck Island community to focus on food issues. Together, these partners explore and enact solutions that strengthen the local food system, support the local economy and expand access to fresh healthy food. Over the past ten years, Bevan has overseen the development of the Island Community Farm property, which hosts 46 garden plots, one micro farm, a pollinator garden AND a food forest. ACT delivers education in school and community gardens, and it creates programs that inspire young people to love healthy foods. Bevan also serves on the Rhode Island Food Policy Council and on the state's Agricultural Lands Preservation Commission. This episode begins with a story walk around a local orchard property.INFORMATION RESOURCESLearn more on the Aquidneck Community Table website - https://aquidneckcommunitytable.org/Check out the Rhode Island Food Policy Council - https://rifoodcouncil.org/Visit the Food Forest Abundance website – https://foodforestabundance.com/get-started/?ref=WENDYFACHON

Voice of the Forest: Guest Matthew Largess, President & Founder, Largess ForestryNationally renowned Matthew “Twig” Largess founded his business, Largess Forestry, Inc., in 1986. His company is dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and education of the Earth’s forests while enhancing awareness and knowledge of the natural world. A Rhode Island native, Matt studied forestry at Paul Smith’s College, and spent his younger years as a logger, cutting down some of the biggest trees on the earth in the Pacific Northwest, before discovering his calling to become the “Voice of the Forest” and preserve and protect our magnificent trees. He is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and a full time environmentalist.Trees are the true guardians of our planet. They provide shade to protect understory plants, animals and people from the burning sun, and they cool the climate. They absorb carbon dioxide from the air and transform it into oxygen, food, wood, leaf compost and so much more. Trees take care of us and connect us in spirit and with Spirit. Trees are an essential resource we must care for in return. In this episode we explore the many ways we can engage with and support our magnificent trees and forests.INFORMATION RESOURCESLargess Forestry website - http://www.largessforestry.com

The Enchanted Edible Forest with Dani Baker, author of The Home-Scale Forest GardenIn the June 2022 episode we introduced the concept of a food forest, which is a diverse, perennial garden of edible plants that mimics a forest ecosystem. A food forest, or forest garden, incorporates multiple layers of edible plants to maximize natural resources and minimize the manual work. As we encounter food supply chain disruption and price inflation, this is a timely topic. When it comes to planning, planting and maintaining an edible forest garden, how easy is it to grow a self-sustaining garden?Guest Dani Baker, owner of the Edible Enchanted Forest, joins us to answer this question. Dani is a permaculture gardener, teacher and author. In her new book, The Home-Scale Forest Garden, she describes forest gardening as a method of agriculture which “requires careful planning and a strong understanding of beneficial inter-species relationships.” Dani is a retired clinical psychologist and a self-taught gardener who learned the craft by immersing herself in reading, poring over nursery catalogs, attending workshops on permaculture and gardening, and engaging in trial-and-error experimentation.Dani's Enchanted Edible Forest garden is located at Cross Island Farms on Wellesley Island in the St. Lawrence River between New York and Canada. She and her partner, David Belding, grow certified organic produce and raise grass-fed beef and goats. Dani conducts workshops and tours in her edible forest garden as well as giving presentations at organic farming conferences and other venues.INFORMATION RESOURCESRead the Enchanted Edible Forest blog - https://www.enchantededibleforest.com/blog/Order The Home-Scale Forest Garden by Dani Baker - https://www.enchantededibleforest.com/the-book/Listen to the Food Forest Abundance episode - https://dreamvisions7radio.com/food-forest-abundance/https://foodforestabundance.com/get-started/?ref=WENDYFACHON

Food Forest AbundanceGuest Jim Gale, Chief Storyteller, Food Forest AbundanceImagine your home surrounded by an edible forest landscape! A “food forest“ is a diverse, perennial garden that mimics a forest ecosystem. Through layers of horticultural design, life extends in all directions producing food, medicine, sanctuary, and habitat. A well-designed permaculture food forest incorporates seven layers of edible plants, including fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines, rhizomes, mushrooms, and perennial vegetables. A food forest embraces the principles of permaculture, which are about working with natural ecosystems, rather than against them. It is thoughtfully planned to produce maximum nutrition, beauty and abundance.Jim Gale, Chief Storyteller at Food Forest Abundance is goal-oriented and visionary. At age 29, he established the goal of retiring in 3 years; he created a mortgage company that reached $1.3B in sales, attaining his goal. Upon retiring, Jim bought a boat, lived on the ocean for a year, and then moved to Costa Rica to build eco-villages. This is where he discovered permaculture and began to envision every household in the world with an abundant food garden. This big vision quickly evolved into Food Forest Abundance. It is a brilliant concept about sovereignty, entrepreneurship, mindset, freedom, and lots and lots of really delicious, nutritious food!INFORMATION RESOURCESFood Forest Abundance website - https://foodforestabundance.com/get-started/?ref=WENDYFACHONFood Forest Abundance Resources - https://foodforestabundance.com/resources/Video: Creating Abundance in Your Back Yard - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJEihCcRH0cVideo: How to Eat a Pine Tree - https://foodforestabundance.com/resources/videos/

Why Eating Organic is Crucial to the Future of the PlanetGuest Zen Honeycutt, Founder and Executive Director, Moms Across AmericaGenetically-modified foods were created to withstand the heavy spraying of toxic herbicides and pesticides. Many crops, both GMO and non-GMO are treated with glyphosate (a.k.a. Roundup Weed Killer), which seeps into the soil, where it is absorbed by grain, bean, fruit and vegetable plants. This is not how food was meant to be grown. These herbicides compromise the beneficial ecosystem that lives beneath the soil. Furthermore, their presence in food has been associated with life-threatening allergies, autism, gastrointestinal and neurological disorders, and even cancer. One solution is to shop for organic foods locally and another solution is to grow an organic food community.Zen Honeycutt is Founder and Executive Director of Moms Across America, a national coalition of Unstoppable Moms and supporters who care about truth, health, freedom, and taking actions to create healthy communities. A prolific writer, Zen has been published in magazines, newspapers, online and her own book, UNSTOPPABLE, the story of a mother who learns about the current state of our world food supply, how it affects your dinner table, and how it affects the health of everyone you love. She is the producer of Communities Rising, a documentary created while traveling the country to speak with individuals and groups seeking and acting upon their desire for health, community and freedom from corporate control over our food supply. Zen is doing everything she can to amplify the voice of moms and truth-telling citizens from around the world. In response to food shortages and food contamination, Moms Across America is launching a community-building initiative and website – neighborhoodfoodnetwork.com.Note: Moms Across America has commissioned lab testing to study the presence glyphosate in breast milk, urine and water. We ran short on time to be able to cover this in the episode, however, you can learn more about this at https://www.momsacrossamerica.com/glyphosate_testing_results.INFORMATION RESOURCESMoms Across America - https://www.momsacrossamerica.com/UNSTOPPABLE - https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/unstoppable-zen-labossiere-honeycutt/1128642913Communities Rising documentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_61okKFJSQNeighborhood Food Network - https://www.neighborhoodfoodnetwork.com/

Farm to School
Guests Karin Wetherill, Co-Director of RI Healthy Schools Coalition, and
Stephanie Bush, Community Education and Farm to School Director at Farm Fresh Rhode Island
Farm to School initiatives enrich the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools. Students gain access to locally-sourced foods, as well as education opportunities that include school gardens, cooking lessons, taste testing new foods, and farm field trips.
The RI Farm to School Network engages partners across the state of Rhode Island to develop, expand, and strengthen these kinds of programs, which serve to:
1) improve public health and the local economy
2) support local farmers and food producers
3) build community
Lead partners in this network include RI Healthy Schools Coalition and Farm Fresh Rhode Island. The episode begins by taking a story walk back in time, circa 1900, for a glimpse of what “farm to school” looked like 120 years ago. As we undergo a revival in bringing local fresh food back into our schools, two special guests will share what “farm to school” looks like today, and why it has regained importance. In a sense, we are digging up some ancestral roots and replanting them new soil.
Karin Wetherill is the Co-Director of RI Healthy Schools Coalition. She has been working collaboratively with state agencies, community partner organizations, school district leadership and wellness committees for over 15 years to advance healthy culture change in schools. Her knowledge of policy, regulation, and evidence-based practices, coupled with her community engagement and advocacy skills, have helped to improve health and education outcomes for RI children.
Stephanie Bush is the Community Education and Farm to School Director at Farm Fresh Rhode Island. She is a Registered Dietitian who has been involved in food security, community nutrition education, child nutrition, and K-12 work for the last 8 years. Her goals are to encourage food literacy among Rhode Islanders and empower them to make informed food choices that support their individual health and the health of their communities.

Empowering Children to Care for the Planet
Guest Deborah Beauvais, Co-author, The Paper Doll Kids, and Founder/Owner, Dreamvisions 7 Radio Network and The Kids 4 Love ProjectHow can we cultivate compassion in children? Studies conducted at The New School in New York City show evidence that literary fiction improves a reader’s capacity to understand what others are thinking and feeling. By reading books that share the experiences, environments, and beliefs of young people raised in other cultures, children are exposed to a wider range of perspectives, and to a greater understanding of human values – such as kindness, compassion, respect, collaboration, and resilience. The Paper Doll Kids is this kind of book, showing how children rise above their own challenges to positively influence others in their communities. The book spotlights children raising awareness to save endangered animal species. The book ties in with the Kids 4 Love Project Radio Show, which celebrates kids as young as 6 years old who are making a difference. Both the book and the radio show are inspiring kids around the world. Our special guest is radio host, network owner, and author, Deborah Beauvais. Deborah is spreading the message that through self-discovery, creativity, and nature we heal each other. She began by creating the Dreamvisions 7 Radio Network in 2007, out of love, with a vision to serve humanity. She is an intuitive, healer, and facilitator of Light as a Reconnective Healing™ and The Reconnection™ Practitioner trained by Dr. Eric Pearl. Since 2004, her syndicated radio show Love By Intuition has fostered empowerment, healing, and unity consciousness. Later she founded the Kids 4 Love Project, an enrichment program for children rooted in self-love.As an author, Deborah co-wrote The Paper Doll Kids and the accompanying song, “Kids for Love,” both with Janine Ouellette Sullivan. The book leaves a legacy for the Beauvais family. Deborah’s three daughters, their late Father, and all 8 grandchildren are weaved into the book! Deborah is also a contributing author for Chaos to Clarity Sacred Stories of Transformational Change, Crappy to Happy: Sacred Stories of Transformational Joy, and Mayhem to Miracles True Stories of Courage, Triumph and Peace compiled by authors Rev.
