HOUR 1
Beautiful Bounty of the Sea--Omega 3 - Carolyn Dean MD ND
This week Ginney has been working with me in my hometown, Maui, Hawaii USA. Spending so much time near the ocean has inspired us to spend our weekly radio show talking about the benefits of including lots of seafood in our diets and supplementing with Omega 3 when our EFA scores dip below ideal.
In 2020 we all realized the essential requirements of the body for defensive nutrients, especially magnesium, zinc, vitamin D, and the essential fatty acids. As a result we offered listeners a chance to get on board with our GrassrootsHealth (GRH) In Home Blood Spot Test. What we discovered is that most of our customers, including myself, were low in omega-3s and Vitamin D!
We’ve spoken a lot about Vitamin D in previous blogs but what about Omega-3 fatty acids. Studies show that low levels correlate with certain health problems and higher levels correlate with good health. GRH has the following to say about omega-3s:
Over 23,000 published research papers support positive health benefits of high omega-3s, with more than 6000 supporting cardiovascular benefits, over 1000 showing respiratory benefits, and more than 2000 showing a benefit to diabetes conditions. Hundreds of studies suggest that omega-3s may provide benefit for a wide range of diseases, including asthma, depression, ADHD, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Higher omega-3s have been associated with improved cognitive function, lower risk of dementia, longer life, and a reduced relative risk for death from any cause. They are beneficial for normal vision, anti-aging, skin health, maternal health, immune system, brain health, heart health, normal liver function, joints and muscles.
So with all these benefits you would not expect that 82% of GrassrootsHealth participants have an Omega-3 Index level below the recommended 8%. Index levels over 8% are associated with heart health, longevity, brain health, reduced risk of breast cancer, lowered inflammatory markets, as well as improved immune response to viral infection. We were similarly shocked to find that every one of our customers, including me, that did the In Home Blood Spot Test were low in vitamin D as well as omega-3s. We’re just not getting enough in our diet; and the supplement I had been recommending was not translating into increased blood levels which I promptly corrected by creating my own!
One of the tremendous benefits of saturation with the essential fatty acids is lowering inflammation. They are both important fatty acid components of cell membranes that contribute to the structure, fluidity, flexibility, enzymatic activity and signaling between cells.
Hand in hand with reduced inflammation is an improved immune response. They increase the activation of macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells (the first-responders that help identify pathogen or virus in the case of an infection), T-cells (that destroy the pathogen or virus) and B-cells (to remember the pathogen or virus and act immediately to destroy it in the case of a future infection), among others. They are responsible for:
- Increasing the activity of immune cells needed to identify and destroy viruses, therefore decreasing the likelihood of viral binding and invasion
- Promoting T regulatory cell development and a controlled inflammatory processes.
- Inhibiting inflammation, decreasing the production of inflammatory chemicals, and preventing a cytokine storm.
I’ve had a sketchy association with omega-3s, mostly because they make me burp, so I try them, burp a lot and stop taking them. We are also told that fish oil formulas won’t be properly absorbed unless taken with a fatty meal. I’m also not keen on depleting the ocean of krill (commonly used in fish oil formulas). Krill is the major food source for our awesome humpback whales that visit Maui every winter.
Therefore, when I decided to create an omega-3 formula, I had fish burping and fatty meals in mind. I took care of that problem by making an algae-based formula that doesn’t require a fatty meal and doesn’t make you burp! I also took care of the fact that I didn’t have Vitamins A or E in any of our formulas so I snuck those into the Omega-3 Algae capsule as well.
Join Ginney and me tonight as we broadcast from the beautiful beaches on Maui and celebrate the incredible bounty of our oceans, our fish, and algae – a key component in my Omega 3 solution.
