Long Live Democracy! with Barbara Berger
It’s no secret that we are living through a very challenging time in human history where the whole world is experiencing so much conflict and the unfortunate but serious decline of democracy. We see and hear every day the tragic news from the US (where I was born and raised) as to the difficulty so many people are having when it comes to engaging in respectful, constructive conversations with each other. It seems to be increasingly difficult for many people to talk or debate with others respectfully, especially when they have different ideas as to how things can and should be done. Therefore, I believe nothing is more important in today’s world than that we all remind ourselves on a daily basis of the importance of the basic democratic principles upon which our societies here in the West are based. And that we continually ask ourselves how well we are doing (each one of us) when it comes to having respectful conversations and exchanges of ideas with our friends, family members and colleagues at work.
Once we understand that it’s just as important to practice the basic democratic principles in our families, couple relationships and other close relationships as it is to practice them in our society in general, the question arises as to how these democratic principles actually play out in our relationships in practice? In other words, most specifically and concretely, how do we talk, act and treat each other when democratic principles and respect are our starting point? I try to answer these very important questions about how to apply these basic democratic principles in our closest relationships in my latest book “Healthy Models for Relationships – the Basic Principles Behind Good Relationships With Your Partner, Family, Parents, Children, Friends, Colleagues and All the Other People in Your Life”. For more about the book, click here: https://beamteam.com/en/barbara/healthy_models.html
What do healthy relationships look like? Most of the difficulties we face on a daily basis have to do with our relationships – be it with our partners, families, children, parents – or with our friends, neighbors or colleagues at work. This is why most of us really want to know how we can best get along with other people. What do healthy couple relationships look like? What do healthy families look like? What are the characteristics of respectful, constructive conversations? How can we best navigate through the challenges we meet in our daily lives and disagree with our friends, colleagues and families in a respectful way without running away or going on the attack? Is it possible to speak respectfully and reach compromises which function for everyone involved? In short, what do healthy relationships look like? Barbara Berger’s answer to these important questions are her Healthy Models which describe what healthy relationships look like in practice. The value of these Healthy Models is that when we have clear models of how healthy behavior looks, we can then compare our own relationships to these models and identify what is not working in our relationships. And this can be a big help because then we can begin to work to improve our relationships. The book is packed with practical techniques and exercises.
About Barbara BergerAmerican-born Barbara Berger is the best-selling author of “The Road to Power – Fast Food for the Soul” (published in 30 languages), “Are You Happy Now? 10 Ways to Live a Happy Life” (published in 21 languages), “The Awakening Human Being – A Guide to the Power of Mind”, and “Find and Follow Your Inner Compass”. Barbara’s latest books include “Healthy Models for Relationships – the Basic Principles Behind Good Relationships With Your Partner, Family, Parents, Children, Friends, Colleagues and All the Other People in Your Life” and her autobiography entitled “My Road to Power – Sex, Trauma & Higher Consciousness”. Barbara lives in Copenhagen, Denmark and works as coach and therapist, helping people around the globe come into alignment with their own true power. Coastal Learning and Stewardship
Guest Maureen Dewire, Education Coordinator, Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
Numerous animal species rely on salt marshes for nesting and breeding. Most of the fish and shellfish eaten in the United States, including herring, crabs and oysters, complete at least part of their life cycles in salt marsh estuaries. Over time, coastal development, introduction of invasive species, over-fishing, dams and climate change have led to a decline in the health of estuaries.
The Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, is one of 30 National Estuarine Research Reserves located around the country, established to provide long-term protection of coastal lands so they can serve as platforms for research, education and recreation. The Reserve’s education sector strives to cultivate awareness, knowledge, and appreciation for Narragansett Bay’s natural resources through a variety of place-based experiences for all ages. Education Coordinator Maureen Dewire shares stories about the Reserve's education programs and describes how she collaborates with others to teach about local research, impacts of climate change and land stewardship.
Dewire grew up in Stonington, CT and made her way to North Carolina where she attended UNC-Wilmington, receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology and a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies. She worked for a non-profit, Bald Head Island Conservancy, as the Director of Education and Senior Naturalist for 8 years where she was lucky enough to spend her days surveying beaches, kayaking through tidal creeks, and hiking in the maritime forest while delivering programs on sea turtles, alligators, birds and coastal ecosystems. Her love of New England brought her back in 2011 when she obtained the position of Education Coordinator position at the Reserve…and she hasn’t looked back since!
