Men, Validation & Infidelity with Alicia M. Walker, Phd

Using a sample collected from the online dating service Ashley Madison, Alicia M. Walker interviewed men about their experiences and perceptions regarding their participation in infidelity. What she found was as fascinating as it was unexpected!
Contrary to gendered social scripts, the men in this study described their motivations for outside partnerships that were not rooted in the desire for sexual pleasure or variety, but rather as an outlet to soothe their bruised egos, receive attention and validation and to fight their feelings of emasculation.

Alicia M. Walker, PhD is an associate professor of sociology at Missouri State University. Like many sociologists, her educational background is varied. Before receiving her PhD in sociology at the University of Kentucky, Walker earned a MEd in educational leadership from Texas State University, and a BA in English from the University of Tampa. She appreciates an interdisciplinary focus and collaboration.  
Walker is a microsociologist, whose work focuses on intimate sexual relationships, sexual identity and behavior, and gender. Specifically, her work looks at the social construction of the sexual self, the ways we make sense of ourselves as sexual beings, the ways we navigate our sexual worlds, and our lived experiences as sexual beings.
Walker has particular interest in closeted sexual behaviors and online initiation of sexual relationships. She is credited with creating a sociology of infidelity. Walker’s second book focuses on men's experiences with infidelity called Chasing Masculinity: Men, Validation, and Infidelity published by Palgrave-Macmillan. This book examines men’s experiences with participation in outside partnerships. Chasing Masculinity has been discussed in The Sun, Vice, The Globe and Mail, and Medium, among others.
Her debut monograph, The Secret Life of the Cheating Wife: Power, Pragmatism, and Pleasure in Women's Infidelity, is available in hardcover now. The Secret Life of the Cheating Wife is about women's navigation of outside partnerships alongside primary partnerships, and gives voices to women's lived experiences.  The book has been discussed in articles published in The New York Times and CNN, among others.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family (adult children, husband, and mother) with whom she is close, and her beloved rescue dog, Harvey, whom she and her daughter found abandoned at a gas station as a puppy. Books of Christmas, Past, Present and Future
The Whitlock Family is made up of Jonathan and Marian with their 4 children Jonathan Jr (19), Caden (12), Jordan (10), and Madison (10). They live in Leesburg, Georgia. The children keep their parents busy with writing books, playing soccer and basketball, singing, archery, guitar lessons, college, and just being children. 
The family loves spending time together and keeping each other entertained with their shenanigans.

Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #514 is an hour of improvised acoustic music played live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts by The Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, shruti box, acoustic guitar, kalimba, ukulele and Native flute, Craig Harris on congas, Native drum and balaphone and Bob Sherwood on piano.  Recorded in early December of 2022, today’s hour begins with the epic sound journey of “Snow Queen” which begins as a pretty, soulful ballad with a fine vocal from Mariam and shifting, rhythmic piano from Bob. The second section, “Rise Up To Meet It” finds Mariam moving to kalimba and Native flute to accompany a powerful vocal lifted higher by Craig’s Native drum heartbeat.  Rising subtly like a sunrise from the final strands of the piece before is the celebratory, chiming “Sweet Home”, a compelling folk song with a gospel pull from Bob’s circular, rich piano and a gorgeous, swirling melody from Mariam.  “Room Of Doubt” comes from the 2009 CD “Gaea Star Crystal:  Awakening The Tribes Of Light” and the band gives it a powerful, confident reading with Mariam setting the tone on chiming acoustic guitar.  “As Far As We Can See” is a beautiful, hypnotic, rhythmic ballad built on Craig’s fundamental Native drum work, low, angular piano figurations from Bob and an Eastern melody from Mariam as she plays her shruti box.  “She Is The River” begins with an extended call-and-response between Native flute and piano to set up a deeply moving, elegiac melodic poem from Mariam as the song settles into a beautifully fragile, light, shifting mix of shade and brightness.  We conclude today’s show with the bluesy “Reflecting The Setting Moon”, a clever blues rock song with a bending, sinuous melody from Mariam.
