A family is more than a collection of related people--it is a “system,” a complex network in which each person affects the others in profound ways. We will discuss the impact of certain types of families on the child by exploring types of parents, including specific types of “toxic” parents and the effect on the child. We’ll also look at how your relationship with your parents has impacted your other relationships as well as steps a person can take to heal. Emily Kubin has been making a difference in the world, one hat at a time. Creating winter hats, scarves, afghans & gloves for the homeless & working poor. In December 2011, Emily, who was just 17, realized she could help the homeless & working poor in her community of Morristown, NJ, by knitting winter hats for them. On December 27, 2011, Emily’s Hats For Hope Initiative (EHFHI) was born.
In total, Emily has made, collected and donated over 15,000 winter hats! This number does not include the hats donated by her spinoffs nor the hundreds of scarves, afghans, etc that she has donated. Members of Emily’s Facebook group have created approximately 40 independent spinoffs of Emily’s Hats For Hope Initiative in the US, Canada, Denmark, and Australia. Emily’s long-term goal is to have a spinoff in every state & in every country. Hundreds of people from Emily’s Facebook page have sent hats, scarves, afghans, & yarn to us as donations.
Emily has received letters of recognition from NJ Assemblyman Anthony M. Bucco, NJ Governor Chris Christie, and Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen. She was interviewed by Roseanne Colletti at NBC Studios in NYC on the Evening Nightly News With Chuck Scarborough in July 2012 and has been interviewed by The Daily Record, The Morris Newsbee, Morristown Patch, Parsippany Patch, and The Star Ledger (NJ newspapers). On March 8, 2013 Emily was interviewed on Ebru Today, an international TV news show. Emily was awarded the 2013 Phenomenal Woman Award, the 2013 Caring Student of the Year Award, the 2013 Points of Light Award, and was a 2013 Huggable Heroes Semi-Finalist. She was also chosen for the 2013 Governor’s Jefferson Award.
Through her dedication to helping others, Emily was accepted into the Civic Scholars Program at Drew University and is currently a sophomore there on full academic scholarship. She is actively recruiting other students from Drew to make winter hats for the homeless and for those in need. She is creating a program on campus where she has students bring home hats to their hometowns during their vacation and then donate them to their local food pantries and soup kitchens.
Please join Emily as she continues to make a difference in the world.

Our Practitioner Sarah Gardner
Yoga Reaches Out (YRO) is a 501(c)(3) public charity that makes a difference in the lives of children by raising funds for children’s organizations through yoga events.
YRO was founded by personal trainer and yogi Sarah Gardner of Wayland, Massachusetts. In the fall of 2010 YRO held its first Yogathon at Gillette Stadium’s Field House in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Close to 500 yogis practiced yoga in the New England Patriot’s training facility. Over $225,000 was raised for Boston Children’s Hospital and Yoga For Single Moms. Under one roof, men and women of all levels enjoyed a day of yoga, music, and fundraising. One of the guiding principles of Yoga Reaches Out is “seva,” the Sanskrit word for “selfless service.”
Since that first event, YRO has held annual Yogathons on both coasts as well as countless local events. To date, YRO has raised over one million and distributed those funds to numerous organizations focused on helping children and their families.
A Yogathon is a fundraising event that brings the yoga community together to aid organizations that help children and families. When YRO Founder Sarah Gardner realized that leading a fulfilling life must include a way to give back to her community, she knew yoga was the means to that important element of her life. She had a simple vision: people coming together to practice yoga, create community and use that energy to raise funds for children and families in need.
If you have yet to participate in a Yogathon, We are sure you will be ready to register for the next Yogathon in your area! Contact us!

As you probably know from my recent book, Our Culture On The Couch – Seven Steps to Global Healing, I believe the only way out of our current mess is for us to stop being controlled by our world, but to bring forth the leadership potential within each of us.
So, this month we will focus on awakening this leader, on the power of the New Paradigm, and explore the potential of conversation as a transformative tool to leverage personal wisdom and spirit.
Juanita Brown Ph.D. with her partner, David Isaacs is the co-originator of The World Café, a pioneering approach to large-scale dialogue and collaborative inquiry being used in corporate, community, government, education, and multi-stakeholder settings around the globe. Hundreds of thousands of people on six continents have experienced the World Café to foster sustainable development, responsible business futures, conflict resol…ution, democratic leadership, and local community engagement around critical issues. Her award-winning book, The World Café: Shaping our Futures through Conversations that Matter, co-authored with her partner David Isaacs and the World Café Community has been translated into 10 languages, and has recently been released in mainland China.
Juanita developed her belief in the power of conversation and community to shape the future through her early years at the Na-Bolom Institute, a center for dialogue and action on indigenous issues and rainforest preservation in Chiapas, Mexico. Juanita was also a key architect in large-scale community development and outreach work with Cesar Chavez and the farm workers movement. She has applied her discoveries about the principles for building engaged communities to the co-evolution of the World Café as social innovation––using both living systems approaches and community development sensibilities to engage a growing global network of multi-generational hosts committed to creating collaborative dialogue and committed action around critical local, national and global issues.
Since 1974, Juanita has collaborated as a strategic thinking partner with senior corporate executives as well as non-profit leaders in the U.S., Latin America, Canada, Europe and the Pacific Rim, advising on large scale change initiatives and creating innovative forums for strategic dialogue around critical organizational and societal issues. Juanita is a Fellow of the World Business Academy and has served as a Senior Affiliate with both the MIT Center for Organizational Learning (now the Society for Organizational Learning) and the Institute for the Future. Her greatest joy, however, is when she finds herself alone in nature on the shores of Tomales Bay, California listening to the loons and seeing the white pelicans floating quietly through the mist.

Midwifery is literally “as old as the hills”. With the movement towards delivering babies hospitals that occurred in the last century, midwives became rare. There has been a recent upsurge in the use of midwives, and not only because hospitals are becoming repositories of infection with “flesh eating bacteria” that are immune to antibiotic treatment (e.g., MRSA – Methicillin-Resistant Staph Aureus). Many couples are coming to the conclusion that having their baby at home, in familiar surroundings, with loved ones nearby, is a much more natural and wholesome procedure.
In nearly every human culture and society in the world, up until rather recently, it was women who were responsible for helping women give birth. Only in our culture, only in the last century or two, did we decide that childbirth should take place in the hospital where every other kind of physical trauma is treated.
Between the time my first son was born and now there has been an enormous movement away from having hospital births supervised by a physician, instead having them take place at home with the assistance of a midwife. Why burden the birthing process with an association with disease and illness, and why risk being that close to deadly infectious agents.
This episode features two guests, a mother and daughter who both happen to be midwives, and as you will learn, one has practiced for 40 years, and the other was present at her first birth at the age of 1 year! Alison Osborn and Daymora Taylor let us in on some of the history of midwifery, what it is, how this surge in popularity has happened, and their personal experience of attending births.
